318

In the late 80's, a buddy had a 56 Chevy with a 265 running in SS/O and it could go 11 teens but he didn't want to blow the index so he kept it around 11.50. Yeah, he buzzed it 9500 rpm to do that and that's part of what you have to do to make a small engine go fast. The 318 engine I mentioned in post #2 is turned 6200 and that's about when either the cam gives up or the springs because that's about all it'll go. From 3000 to 6200 it's on fire but anything before 3k and after 6200, it's dead as can be. It's so dead on the bottom end, it won't even do a burnout. But like I said, we just threw some parts at it...stuff that was just laying around and didn't even try to match up a good combo lol but the biggest gain in the car was gears....deep ones and doing a bit of port work to the 360 heads.

yup my 318 now ran 14.8 but when i add my 650 holley dp, casting 302 heads fully ported 188-160 valves, comp cam xe268, and a single plane it should be in the 13s then a 125 shot should be 12s

I've had three, a 66 Charger with a poly, a 72 Charger with an LA and my current driver, a 98 Dakota with the 5.2L Magnum (bought new). The 66 and 72 I owned in the 70's when they were just old beaters, but I never had a problem with the engines. Also, I just bought my son a 65 Coronet for Christmas that will be a daily driver. It has a 318 poly. Completely stock and runs great after 47 years!

Great engine. my '67 Coronet with 318 won many races even though it only ran 14's.

I've always been a fan of the Mopar big block engines, but I quite like the Mopar small blocks too.
It's too bad so many guys think it has to be one or the other!

Chrysler turned out so many cool engines through the years. The Slant six, Poly 318, early Hemi's, 426 Hemi, Max wedge, LA 318, 340/360, 383 (RB and B), to mention a few. They all have potential and can make for enjoyable motoring.

my first coronet had a 318 and I loved it and played dukes of hazard behind the airport all through high school with it. We beat it, trashed it, slammed it and it kept going. My second coronet had one too and I took it apart in the back yard on a whim and re-assembled it She ran well also. Now I have a 273 but it's good on gas and sounds nice but I am not 18 anymore.
