70 RR 440 Six Pack Question

I just recently purchased a 1970 RR with the 440 and a 4-barrel setup. I am looking at putting in the six pack setup. Question is, would you recommend looking for the original 6 pack intake or one of the newer complete kits that are out there? Here are two of the newer kits I have been looking at.

What are some pro's and con's of each? Eventually I want to end up putting the air grabber hood on there too, but as many of you probably know, it is not easy or cheap to piece together an original one. So, I am patiently waiting and looking for that. This is my first Mopar. I have always been a Chevy guy, but when I saw this car, I fell in love and saw the potential. Right now it is in the body shop getting the horrible red that it had on it and bringing it back to the original Plum Crazy Purple. Not sure what person in their right mind would do that to an original Plum Crazy car. It is also getting the motor and tranny looked over, amongst many other things. I think I am now converted to Mopar. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

i believe both kits are the same. all original 1969 edelbrock intakes are bad. some early 1970 edelbrock intakes fit good. aftermarket edelbrock intakes, that would be in the kits listed, are usually on the wide side and look for casting flaws. the only real issue with 6-pak carbs is the lean idle condition of the 3 carbs and the lean main metering of the center carb. if you use the repopped factory vapor separator with a return line the return orifice is too large. the carbs will require a better fuel pump than the single diaphragm replacement pumps most people use on resto cars. the original type pumps have been gone for many years. expect a 40-50hp gain when properly set-up vs a stock iron intake and carb.
 
Welcome to Moparworld ! Maybe I get lazier as I get older, but for a non-original car, I'd just get the whole package in one fell-swoop. Do yourself a favor & deal with "people" not mail-order takers. Herb is a good vendor, done business many times. Also, places like Mancini, Ted Stephens, etc. I've always been a "do it my way" type, for a non-original car, so have fun going the burger king route (have it your way) ...
 
I have a 70 V-code and I am not sure I agree that the Edelbrock aftermarkets have flaws. I bought one from Indy with my heads and fits (is port matched) and it flows great. That being said I wanted to keep the stock look and the Air Grabber, but the intake is clearly the limiting factor in my build. But it still made 650hp on the dyno with 580 lb-ft at 5200. It is all I need.
I still have the original intake but it is a heavy piece and I cut 50lbs by swapping to aluminum. Another benefit is that you can work the aluminum ports and runner roof pretty easy.
And I have no lean issues at all on idle. If the set-up is dialed in it extremely nice.

I sure like the idea of buying new parts in a complete package and from respectable businesses. You will no doubt, find that even these kits need a lot of massage, patience and research to make right. It also sounds like you want to make this as "originally appearing" 70 V code RR as possible. I personally went the other way with mine. It is an original v code car and spent hours in research, detailed work to achieve originality. Good luck with your decision.IMG_0216.jpg

Thanks. I must say, that is a damn good looking engine bay and motor you have there! I cannot wait for my motor to be rebuilt and re-painted as well as the engine bay. Should look very similar once completed. And after seeing yours, that six pack is a must now. haha
 
You will save a TON of money buying the "kits" and not worrying about being 100% original (not a V code car anyway, right?)
 
Yea, unfortunately not a V code car. Just trying to keep the value up on the car as much as I can, while making improvements to it that I would like to have.

I have for now decided to put a hold on the six pack though, because restoration costs have increased quite a bit :( Guess that is what happens when you want everything done right the first time and are actually paying attention to the little things on the resto. The little nickle and dime parts have definitely started to add up as many of you already know, but it will be worth it in the end. Hoping on a decent tax return check and if it happens, that will be going towards a new six pack setup.

The motor has a 440 Source 4.150" stroker crank, forged pistons making 11:5, Indy EZ-295 heads, .728/.728 solid roller, 1.7 rockers, Jesel belt drive, 2-1/8" TTI headers and 3" X pipes
A833 done by Brewers, McLeod clutch kit, Dana with Richmond 4:10 posi with Moser axles.

i bet it does. nice build!! if you get a chance i'd like to see a better shot of your fuel lines on the carbs, looks like you made a pretty cool set up.
