hi guys. having a small issue with the 66 charger....heres whats goin on......... :

when it sits over night.....the only way to get it going is to pour a bit of gasoline down the primaries and it fires right up. once its running, its fine but it wont start on its own. im thinking one of 2 things....

1. float adjustment is incorrect...OR......
2. fuel pump diaphram isnt holding and draining down and losing prime

the carb is a Carter AFB (i think ) 4 bbl and the choke is not closed all the way....its where it should be on start up, opened just a little bit...and opens more as it gets hot . it is timed correctly@10 BTDC.......whats your thoughts ????

if its the floats , ill need a lesson on adjusting them...if its the fuel pump, i got that covered !

I would go with the fuel pump,if it starts after the time!

The fuel pump probably has a pinhole in it and the fuel is draining into the oil pan.

it starts right up even after an hour of sitting. i am thinking fuel pump also but wanted more opinions!

no fuel in the oil RAT....im thinkin it might be draining back in the gas tank and losing prime.

Could well be.
...on the flip side of that....shouldnt the fuel bowl be full enuff to start it the next day after a night of sitting? thats whats making me think perhaps the floats are adjusted too low....id rather have some opinions before i dive into something.

I believe it's the floats ... if you need to pour gas in to get it to fire then there is no gas in the fuel bowl.

Mine does the same thing although to a lesser degree. Stock 440 fuel pump & edelbrock 750.
It will start the next day fine but after 3 or 4 days gotta crank it quite a bit. After driving for a while and parking it, I can hear fuel draining back into the tank and the filter has no gas in it. The carb has only 5000 miles on it, not sure about the pump, but it's going to be replaced first.

I think it could be vapor lock, fuel is boiling out of carb....Leaving you empty for start up. AFB carter, you can remove top of carb without removing it from intake to do some checks.

i dunno POPS....its runnin 160 with no thermostat..(it was stuck and i hadda remove it) .. and itll fire back up after even 3 hours of sitting. its the next day is the prob. OHHHHHHHH...got your email...thanx a million!

I'm with Pops on this one. The new gas where I am is absolute poison for a carb. I can remember back in the 80's running a torker on a 383 with the heat cross over open and never had an issue starting or restarting the car. Now I have to block the heat riser and that's still not enough. Also, when I shut the car down after being fully warmed up I get a strong gas smell because the gas these days is designed to vaporize differently.

My hemi has TWO buckets of gas sitting on a hot stove and you can damn near forget about having that thing crank up in two or three revolutions after sitting all week. The reason why I think things behave while driving is the carb is being cooled by a steady supply of cool gas, but as soon as that supply stops the temps equalize and the trouble begins.

On my old FE Ford I had a very strong gas odor when I shut it down hot and soon found out that gas was condensing in the air cleaner breather hose. I pulled the intake, blocked the heat riser and much of the smell stopped and no more vapor condensing in the breather hose.

could also be leaking from the carb to the intake.check for fuel in the carb before you try to start it.also check for fuel from the line at the carb while cranking before you start it.should tell you where prob is.
