Anyone know if any other year mopar had the same glove box latch assembly as the 70 B body. Reason I ask is I am about to break off the one I have as it has no key for it and cant figure out how to remove it without the key. I want to remove the plastic front piece of the glove box so I can repaint all of the metal part of it and then put it back together. Also if anyone knows where I can get one with a key PM me please.
Thanks for all the help !
David

Take it to a locksmith and have a key made, it'll be a lot cheaper than finding a new latch. I had to do the same thing before. Once you've got a key it's easy to take out - although I don't remember how to do it off the top of my head :) Pretty sure there's a little pin you push while you have the key turned though.

Wait!

Before you break it off: The glove box itself is paper/cardboard, and you can get a new one on ebay for 20 bucks. Tear out the bottom of the cardboard glovebox and put a stubby phillips in and remove the 6 screws holding the bottom of the glovebox door off, or the 2 screws on top holding the latch that the lock closes on. It's probably easier to replace the cardboard box (I just did) than to try to repair a damaged glovebox door...

Should be you trunk key. Is it locked and your key wont open it? If it is open I think there is a pin you have to push from the back side to get it out.

I have the door off of the dash but can not get the cylinder out I do not have the key for it. And can not find any where to get it to come apart.

I just painted my glovebox metal inside and lemmeetellya.......you need to be a rubix cube expert to get it out and back in,,,,took me over an hour to get the damn thing back in and working right. i got mine out with the trunk key,,,,even tho the trunk key WAS NOT THE RIGHT KEY FOR THE GLOVE BOX. put in in there and play with it...itll come out.....do the same to get it back in.....i hope youre bald because if yaint,,,you will be by the time your done! lmao good luck!

The chrome knob is a slight press fit to the lock mechanism. You can pry the chrome piece off with a simple screw driver. Just stick the screw driver in a small amount and pry to one side.....it will pop off. You can then remove the two screws from the back side to take the cylinder out. I have done this on several.....it works quite well. When you put it back together you can press it together with a simple vise and a cloth tp protect the chrome. Note: the chrome piece only installs one way to work properly. It is fairly evident once you look at it closely. Good luck!

When you say put the screwdriver in a small amount where are you talking (in to the key hole and pry it off) or off to the side of the chrome and pry up ?

Don`t Pry !!!

Hope i`m not too late.
First, take out the two screws that hold the latch on the inside.
Second, place the catch in the upright postion to lock it.
Third spin the whole assembly 180 degrees.
Fourth make sure the chrome key receiver on the outside is parallel with the catch on the inside & now your tumblers will be lined up with a very small square access hole in the barrel part of the assembly.
fifth take a small screw driver as seen & with NO key in the outside slot, push the first tumble gently into the barrel & then apply a small amount of pressure outward. There are 5 tumblers that this must be done to and then your assembly will come apart without doing any damage. Take your time, & it doesn`t take alot of pressure to do this. Good Luck

I got it off but it did not have the pieces to push down to remove the lock cylinder in that little square hole although it did have the square hole. There is another square hole to the left of that hole and it had the pieces there to pull out the cylinder.
Thanks a bunch !

Glove box lock removal

I bumped this forward to help out moparbob75 & or Rick. :blob1:

I not sure if he got it off or not I had to go back to work on this dang boat

sorry for poaching your post I'm having a related problem, I replaced the cardboard box its self but the door wont close, it's not clicking shut on that metal clip

Can you manually lock the latch , on the back side of the lock ,with your finger & does is stay in the lock position? If you can ,then your sticker on the frame has to be moved out, so the lock can fully close & latch shut. If not then your assembly ,with the tumblers may not be installed properly or perhaps your spring in the base of the assembly is broke.

aah. never thought of that, maybe its locked, thanks for the tip, I'll see if that works
