Hi Guy's,
I think I need to buy a new water pump for My 440.
Any brands You recomend? or to stay away from?

and are they all the same? and any suggestions where to buy the correct one from?

thanks Steve.

mopar performance. I heard the 440source ones have problems with the housings.

big block water pumps are about as simple as they come.as long as you stay with a name brand your quality should be fine.have not seen any real difference with aluminum vs iron, other then the tiny weight difference.only time to worry is for race or high hp street motors(600 hp or more)then you may want to look at high flow pumps.i have run standard pumps on 550 hp motors here in the desert(120 degrees in summer)with no issues.

Hello Propwash,
Yachtdoc here. Cudos on the photos. I Being a Marine Engineer appreciate the time and energy it took to educate all with such clear information Nice resolution these days. Where were these cameras when we needed them as youngsters we would be a bit further along

This thread below is some very good reading. Lot of great information and experiences. I really recommend taking the time to go through the 13 pages. You'll be glad you did.

I saw that post long ago it's too bad that guy had an issue with his housing and his machinist thought that was the problem but all I can say is mine works fine since day one over a year through 3 seasons now. Also there is aparently a difference between a/c pumps and non a/c pumps the 440source pump as superior flow.

Good to hear it's been working out good for you jb. I wasn't recommending parts or combinations, just playing Switzerland. The threads have some real world info in those discussions that folks might find pretty interesting.

if yer car has no AC, make sure you get one for a non-ac car..they are different

If you use the wrong one, it will overheat

I know propwash is trying to play switzerland (even though their neutrality was BS btw ;) ) but I'll give you a quick summery. The early (possibly current still) 440 source pump housing has a restrictive outlet on one side. HOWEVER in testing the housing preformed as well as the stock iron housing. The lack of flow / cooling then was concluded to be from the 440 Source pump (or at least the 'hurricane' designed impellers it uses). The 'restrictive' 440 source housing with a 'quality' pump such as the Mildon High Flow (the one they used) preformed as good.

So to wrap up, better quality house is advisable, but will likely make no difference for most engines bar the big pony ones. However the pump choice DOES make a big difference. You can check the first link on about page 10-11ish to see some pump comparison flow rates.

For me, I'll be getting 6-8 blade high flow pump with anti cavity plate. The Ebay housing I have isn't the same restrictive design as the 440 source in question, which I'm quite happy about :)
