I saw a couple threads talking about using the Helicoil tap and die inserts to fix this issue. The only question I had does anyone know what specific Helicoil kit I should buy, the whole kit is like $150, but each individual kit is ~$30, as I only have 1 bolt whole giving me this headache. I just purchased this car 1 week ago and I was just checking all the bolts etc. and found this. Of course, the stud came out and so did the coolant behind it.

I'm assuming you mean the head is stripped, not the stud. 3/8"x16 NC is what you need. Easy to use assuming you can drill the hole straight. You can use a 90 degree drill motor but have an extra set of eyes to get it square to the surface.

What do you mean by "individual kit". That $30 kit is likely just more replacement inserts "no tools". I've used them countless times and they work great but you have to have the tap, insert toll and the inserts. Make sure whatever kit you have has all of them and your set "probably the 150.00 one". Good luck

i have used a small kit from carquest off the shelf that was fairly cheap to fix a couple of heads with the same issues with exhaust studs, big block and small. kit came with everything but the drill bit but instructions had what size bit needed to drill out stud to install coil. tim

Thanks for the quick response picking up one tonight and going to give it a go. Another question, it is normal for coolant to leak out of the exhaust stud holes on the head?

Yes, it's normal- the end holes go into the coolant passages on big block heads. Use a good quality thread sealer on the stud when you put it in- I like red Permatex.

Good to know, I guess I'll pull those back out, just the end ones 4 total?

Yes, 4 total unless there was porting done on the heads. BTW, NAPA also sells the individual size kits (3/8" X 16tpi), that include the inserts (several), the tap and installation tool. You'll also need a 25/64" drill bit.
