Lately there have been questions on 8 3/4" rear ends that "one" can purchase thru local salvage yards, etc. Question of compatibility, length and what vehicle they came in. Here are a few things I have found to help me when searching for a rear end. Hope this helps someone. I just bought a rear end and it was not compatible. Now I know.
REMEMBER: if it was made before 1964 the axes were tapered and the axle flange assemblies were held in place by the use of a KEY and LOCKNUT configuration. (like my 1963 Max Wedge 741 housing)
Best to search for the 2070742s (742s) used from 1961-1969 and used the 1 3/4" diameter 10-spline pinion shaft OR the 2881488s and the 2881489s, used from 1969-1974 and were the only cases used after 1972. Pinion shaft diameter: 1 7/8" with the either a 10 or 29 spline.
Rear end housing widths used on MOPARs. (NOTE: All measurements are from brake drum to brake drum)
1966-1972 A-bodies: 57 1/8"
1962-1963 B-bodies: 58 1/2"
1964-1967 B-bodies: 59 1/2"
1970-1971 Imperial: 59 3/4"
1968-1970 B-bodies: 60 1/8"
1970-1974 E-Bodies: 61 5/8"
1965-1969 C-bodies: 61 3/4"
1965-1970A100 vans: 61 3/4"
1965-1966 imperials: 62"
1967-1969 Imperials: 62 5/16"
1970-1971 C-bodies: 63"
1971-1974 B-bodies: 63"
1965-1971 D100 trucks: 64"
1969 C-body wagons: 64 3/8"
1971-1973 B-body wagons: 64 3/8 "
1970-1973 C-bodies: 64 3/8"
1972-1974 D100 pickups: 64 3/8"

Okay so with that being said, is it possible for a 1970 8 3/4 in. rearend that had originally a 489 3.23:1 gear ratio with 29 spline 29in. long axles. My question is will these axles fit into a 741 case with 3.91:1 gear ratio sure grip? And will the 741 case fit into my 8 3/4 in. 10 bolt pattern rearend? I'm looking at the 741 with a 3.91:1 here at a shop not far from where I live and just wanted to give you guys a chance in helping me decide to buy it for $375 without shipping or go for the 4.10 geared 8 3/4 in. being sold here on the forum but I would have to spend for shipping. I really like the 4.10 but I would be willing to settle for the 3.91 pumpkin because of it's price and no shipping. Basically buy it and carry it in the back of my truck and take home. I really appreciate any advice in helping me with this dilemma. Thanks, Johnny O.

All axles are 30 splines, and yes they will fit in that 741 case, all third members are same and will fit in all houses, just watch if you have tapered bearings so the trust buttons still are present in the new third member, the pinion have both 29 and 10 splines, Im not sure but all pinions 73-74 were 29 splines.

Since this is a rear end thread , Can anyone tell me the dia. of the holes and spacing of the bearing preload adjusters ? I had my rear end apart this weekend and totally spaced out on measuring them . I want to make a spanner wrench. I found my Borg unit had a broken pin and the shaft wore out the bore where it fits in the case. I have a brand new Sure Grip on order, and would like to have a spanner next time. Thanks .

Ski, thanks for the post, again some great information. I have another question, the location of the casting numbers? Got a 8 3/4 from the boneyard Friday, still cleaning it up, but not seeing any numbers on the lower right side? Rear end came out of a Fury. Any help would be appreciated.

I use a non-adjustable 2 3/4" face spanner wrench but I had to grind the pins just a bit to get it to fit. You could also get an adjustable 3" face spanner and that should work fine. I have a 4" adjustable and the pins are a bit large but I can tap it into the adjusters. Filing the pins some would make it easier to use tho.
