Factory traction bars ?

Was this an option for a 67 coronet rt? I have what appears to be a set of factory installed traction bars.i do not have a build sheet or any information on this car. Any info would help

nope . no such animal. aftermarket add-on. they've probably been on there a really long time
 
Those ARE weird- no snubbers. Almost look like Cal-Tracs.
 
The purpose of traction bars is to limit the rotation of the axle under acceleration.

I'm no traction guru but if you already have a pinion snubber, why add the bars? Why not adjust the pinion snubber?
 
Had a pair of those on a 66 Mustang Fastback. Don't know if the car had wheel hop before they were added because they came on the car when I bought it used in 74. The car didn't have any wheel hop tho but it didn't really have much traction either. As for Cal-Tracs....this line is from his site "We are Calvert Racing, providing drag racers unsurpassed quality craftsmanship and traction performance for over 15 years." And that's about when I started hearing about him. Never heard of the name in the 70's. And that's the first time to see a pair of those on a Mopar and never had wheel hop problems with any of the ones I've had....
 
I'll add to the mystery. First, they're not CalTrac or Competition Engineering Slide-a-link bars. In 1964, my buddy and I went to a Chevrolet dealership in San Rafael, CA to look at a 63 Plymouth Belvedere with a 426 / 3 speed that had been traded in on a new car. It had similar traction bars on it. The sales guy said that the original owner told him that the bars were in the trunk when he picked it up from the Chrysler dealership. Better light and up close pictures of the mounting points would help see if they were a commercially made bar or homemade, as I built some similar bars in the 60s. In any case, makes for interesting conversation...
 
wow i will get some new pictures of them on here asap! the third owner told me that they were factory,but i cannot find a name or numbers or anything on them.

They look sorta like these. Thse are on Mavericks 63 Dodge Max Wedge as if you look close behind the rear spring hanger you see this other hanger that is hooked to a bar going up to the rear housing. I was surprised to see this on Mavericks 63 Dodge Max Wedge car in this mag article from 1963. Ron

This is the rest of the article. It was where they tested his car and another 63 Maxie stick car. Both were stock with headers and a super tune by Maverick with cheater slicks. He ran 12.50's with the auto and 12.70's in the stick car at the same mph. Ron

Kinda like Caltracs from the 60's as I never knew they ever used that in the 60's !

Iteresting, the weight transer helps keep the wheels planted.

Also interesting they're on the "back".

Cal Tracs rotate the front of the spring down, don't they?
Theory being that traditional bars try to lift the car, which is counter productive.

Those aren't on the "back" though, the OP's pic shows them from the front segment to the axle. I've seen the one's on Maverick's 63 on other max wedge cars in mags.

Pinion snubber is in the middle, still allows rear to flex springs.
 
62 Max is right. Traction Master put these out in the 60's and a lot of Ford guys used them also. A version is still for sale thru various "classic Mustang" suppliers. They call them "Under Ride" bars.

my 67 Coronet has/had them on it when I got it too...same thing.

Where do you get them at? I have a brother that has a 64 galaxie that has wheel hop issues. I need to pass the info along to him.

Your right Bill. Only us old guys know the names of this old equipment these days. LOL!

They do not belong on an old Mopar as stated above either the correct height snubber or clamoing the front of the springs was necessary for the Mopar suspension until you get past the Super Stock cars.
