I am trying to find out when the practice of putting a VIN or partial VIN on the engine block started. The only info I have found on this is below(from moparts.org)

"On 1968 and later engines the numbers stamped on the lower rail of the engines right (passenger) side match the last 8 digits of the cars vehicle identification number"

If this is correct, then pre 68 blocks of all CIDs have no VIN, only date codes?
Does anyone else have any different info?

Mostly correct.

I'll add that early 68 also has no stamp, and some 68s have the number in what looks like "welding" on the top back of the block near the bellhousing.

That's the beauty of pre-1968.5 Mopars- a "correct" date code engine equals the original engine.

68 big block VIN stamping will be found on the top rear edge of the block, off centered towards the right side.
67 and earlier are casting numbers and engine assembly dates only. No numbers "matching" VIN on them.

Here are two pics of a 1968 440. The vin stamping isn't always on the right (pass) side. This one is on the left (driver) side of the block.

Never seen a 68 one. thanks.

Almost looks hand stamped.

Could that be Belvidere plant only, I have a Lynch Road 383 stamped to the right side. Most I have seen are to the right. (Lynch Road and St Louis)
