NHRA Racing in 60's & 70's - Modified Production

Anyone have an old rulebook, or recall, how they classified non-stock cars into Modified Production ?

As I recall if something like a 1964 Belvedere had a 383 and went from 1 - 4bbl to 2 - 4bbl's it could run Modified Production. How as the class determined ? Weight / cubic inches?

I think 1 - 2bbl to 1 - 4bbl , 1 - 4bbl to 2 - 4bbl's, or a switch to 3 - 2bbl's could land you in the MP running. No superchargers, no NOS.

Any breaks on the classes ( V-8) would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Ted

Don't have an old rule book but ran against a B/MP VW bug. My old junk back then was in E/A2. My car wasn't very fast for that class but with what I had on it, it put me in there. Anyways, it was only running 14.80 and this bug ran me side by side in a time trial (I beat him tho) but it kinda shocked me that it was running that fast but I also think he wasn't very fast for being in the B class either. There wasn't any bracket racing back then so you needed to even keep all four tires the same unless you wanted to be bumped up in class...

That was kind of prior to Comp Eliminator classes, I remember a guy that was a friend of my step fathers, that had a 70 Challenger 383 4bbl that was a C/MP, I was only 10 y/o & I don't remember all the rules/reg's they dropped the MP classes very shortly after that... not sure what year it ended.. 76-78 or so ??... I think, {don't quote me} you had to have stock bumpers, stock glass, stock seats, stock type suspension, stock wheel base, no chops or channeling, no narrowed rears, etc. I don't really know all the rules.. maybe Google it.. here are a few examples of various MP classes, prior to or about the time, all the Super Street 10.90, Super Gas 9.90, Super Comp 8.90, Super Eliminator 7.90, Competition Eliminators Many Various Classes weight per/ci started to take over... hope these help a little

Thanks guys for the info and pics. Very much appreciated. Ted

'Back then', NHRA configured M/P minimums by the actual car weight divided by the engine cubic Inch displacement per class (IE:A/MP-7-7.99, B/MP 8-8.99, etc lbs per cid), all steel body, full interior, 2x4 maximum, any engine modifications, no slicks outside the fenderwell lines, all factory safety glass, 7" max scoop height, factory appearing, etc. In the late-60s/early-70s 7" 'cheater slicks' in the slower class cars (C/MP-H/MP), not sure but memory says A/MP-B/MP was 10.5-11" full slick? That's off the top of my head but pretty close to that. Pretty fast cars for what it was, especially with the engine/tire/clutch tech for the day...it was exciting and I miss it! A few years ago, things were looking as though AHRA was going to be revived and the 'older classes' were coming back. Alas...stuff occurs and that fell on it's...***!
