383 vs 440

I have just bought a 1966 Coronet which has a 383 in it. I am looking at putting a 440 into it and was wondering if there were any differences in things like the position of the Engine mounts, Bell housing pattern, if I wanted to use the 727 thats currently behind the 383. Are the water pumps interchangable in case the outlet on the 440 is on the side.
Any thing else I need to know.

the only differance between the 383 and 440 is the deck hieght,,everything will interchange between the two except intake manifolds.

also the distributor won't as the 440 is a bit longer
 
There's an adapter for the distributor. Might be MP.

If you have headers, the deck height difference may or may not cause them to fit differently, esp in the trans linkage and starter areas.
 
And as long as its an internal balance 440. If its cast crank, torque converter would need to change, for weight. Also, reuse your brackets and pulleys, just to be safe. All the car stuff should be the same, but the trucks have some differences certain years.
 
Yes, the adapter for the distributor allows you to use the 440 distributor in any of the low deck engines. Mancini has it. When you pull the 383, can I have it?

383 takes a extra alt bracket on the pass head and the 2 A/C compressor mounting brackets that go to the intake manifold are different. These are the differences between B and RB motor brackets for cars. All other brackets are the same between B and RB. Trucks take different brackets than cars but have the same differences between B and RB motors.

You can do this with the stock convertor. Most older trans shops will have a book showing where and how much weight to put on the torque convert to keep the rotating mass in balance. On a cast crank 400, it will be 2 small weights, one on each side of the drain plug. These are tack welded on. I've had this done a couple of times and is a very minor job. What I don't know is how much weight and weight placement for a 440 though I would guess it will be similar to the 400.
 
Yes, he is right, the weights can be added or removed as needed.
 
And here I was salivating at reading the pros and cons of each engine and how they stacked up!

Kickdown linkage is a little different- the vertical piece is a little longer for the 440. You can easily modify this piece if you're halfway handy with a grinder and welder.
