hey guys, I have two sets of gears for my dana and want your opinion. the drive line is a 11.1 440 with steel crank H beam rods and stealth heads with a 305 h cam and torker 2 intake with 850 holley. the trans is a hughes built 727 manual v/b with a mopar J convertor. I am using 30" rear tires, my question is I have a set of 4.10's and a set of 5.38's. the car is 90% track use so is the 5.38 too much gear?

I think so, you would probably be past where you want your rpms to be

With an auto I'd say 5.38 is too much - 4 spd is another story. I'd run the 4.10's and see where you are and I bet they will put you pretty close. Might end up with 4.30's or 4.56.

The only way to tell is run 'em down the track and see where you at top gear redline. It may be a little too much gear, as some guys are saying. 4.10's would probably be just about right.

5.38's would probably be great for the 1/8 mile....

I remember seeing a formula for calculating RPM's as you go through the traps depending on what gears your are running and tire size. For the life of me I can't remember where(think it was Hot Rod or Car Craft). I love getting old.

He doesn't have enough cylinder head for 5.38 gears unless the're only racing to the 330'........ that 4.10 would be fine in the eighth and I'd suspect that it'd fall on it's face at the 1000' in the quarter even with the 4.10's...

I'm bought my 69 RR to be a cruiser not a quarter miler, so take this for what it's worth.

The guy I bought the car from had put 5.38's in it (still there now) and I can't get em out of there fast enough. It is a 4spd and even running it out to 5K I move through all 4 gears in an instant....top speed is 70Mph @ 5K RPM....it's a hell of a fun ride getting there though!

5.38 would be too much for the 1/4 with that combo. Keep in mind he does have a 30 inch tall tire. If it was mine, I would put a 4.30 or 4.56 gear in it

I ran 5.38's in 1980 with 14/32 tires and was turning 7200 RPM in the quarter. The car I have now with 4.10's and 18.5/31 tires is turning 6500. Hope that helps.

This line of thinking is why we have so many slow mopars at the drag strip. Go there sometime. You guys will find out that 5.38 gears, purple shafts and J converters haven't been relevant or fast since about 1980......

I agree 5.38 for 1/8 might be good
bad for street and 1/4

im thinking 5.13 for mine basic 383HP 727 3200 stall and as big as tire will fit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
