Hi All

I have a very sloppy power steering box and was considering my options. I am about to order and ship a heap of stuff from Summits, and saw they stock Cardone re-co PS boxes for not alot of $$ ($128 + $35 core charge).

Are they OK, or am I buying potential prolems?

If ya can, call FirmFeel, they blueprint the boxes and NOBODY has complained about them.

Hey mate.
Yeah, I hear ya, but big price difference!! I was hoping somebody had (hopefully good) experience with these Cardone units....

Since Cardone bought just about everybody else out of business, it doesn't leave many choices. Of course you have what I call custom rebuilt units like FirmFeel that either make their own units or like Red-Head that rebuilds & upgrades the steering box units. These specialty companies complete an upgrade up & over the original factory unit. If you are looking for just a rebuild of the stock unit and want it to function like the original, then I have had good luck with Cardone products. I have bought several units from them and both have been trouble free.

Can't you order a police steering box? Thought I heard you could get those remanufactured ones but I'm not sure.

You might want to call and make sure it won't get backordered. I was checking around for a '72 Satellite gearbox and every website showed in stock, but when I ordered, it backordered. I didn't check with everyone however, because I decided to borrow one from another project car.

It is back ordered at Summit too. I'm not in a ball busting hurry - the weather on this bottom half of the world is turning to crap....

Sounds like it is worth giving a go.

we use cardone products all the time here at the shop.probly install there stuff 5 to 6 times per week.very rare to have a problem with there stuff.they are a quality rebuilder and that is why they have taken over the industry.

Got mine though Oreillys and i like it as does does feel a touch firmer over stock.Think for a 68 B body it was around $180.00 with out a core and came with a new pitman.

I ordered an A1 Cardone power steering gearbox for my 1971 Charger PN 27-6581 from Summit Racing. It was on back order for over 2 months really holding up my build. A1 Cardone - Summit Racing finally cancelled the backorder detailing "not available" but never notified me. Don't waste your time like I did....go with Steer & Gear or Firm Feel.

Sorry to hear this. I imagine this only happened as they had no cores.
PS - I posted this in 2013. Steering Box was back ordered, delivered and has been working great since....

A-1 is the bottom of the barrel -- they have taken over the market -- because the world wants cheap -- and that's what they are.....
You get what you pay for --- you want cheap -- that's what they are....
10 times a year when I tall someone that their item is "R & R" --- as in Rebuild & Return --- because there is NO availability ----
they tell me --- "Too late, sent it to A-1 and they lost the original one" ------ Hence, car is now DORMANT........

DON'T DO IT!

I brought one for the same reason, shipped over to Australia. First off, it was covered in sticky tar like 'paint' took ages to scrap off and repaint.

Then I found out once I went to install it (agreed my fault shoudl have test fit) that the size of the main shaft (that the column connects to, sector shaft?) was bigger and had a different tooth spline on it. MASSIVE PAIN to pull it all back out. Ended up repainting my original and running it. Very disappointed.

I haven't returned it as the cost on shipping is horrendous. I'm looking to upgrade to a Borgson in the future instead and save some weight and space along with better performance.

I went with Steer & Gear in my A100. A great feel for a rebuilt 50 year old box....no slop, very positive.

Actually thinking about it, if you can get the measurements of the input shaft I could measure mine up. I am assuming that this is from either an earlier or later model, so it may be right for you. If it is, I'm happy to on sell my unused one. Its at least cleaned up and properly painted and ready to go. I was hanging onto it for my rod build, but I can use anything for that really.

LOL at the idea that Cardone's stuff is high quality. It is not — it's junk. The low price is attractive, but sooner than later the odds are you will curse yourself for having bought on price instead of quality.

Firm Feel, Steer & Gear, and Red Head all offer very high quality steering box rebuilds and upgrades and exchanges. All three of them are worth your custom.
