Hey Guys, Anyone know if this is normal and should be cleaned? I just removed my intake manifold from my 318 and noticed what looks like corrosion and blocked water jackets? One side is completetly blocked and the other is almost 100% blocked. Thanks

Yup, that build up in the center port is normal. It is NOT a coolant port but rather a "heat" passage from exhaust heat to warm up the intake for choke operation. If you look inside intake it will be corroded also. Need to chip it out and clean for better cold driveability... but if you are not using a choke or have an electric choke mounted to the carb with no need for intake heat you could plugged those passages and keep excess heat out of intake for a performance advantage. A very common thing on those engines, have done LOTS of them thru the years here at the dealership.

normally when one of my buddies says "Hey, man can you look at this? Is this normal? Should I get it checked out?" I tell 'em to keep their pants on

if you live in a warm climate you are ok.....if you drive in COLD weather clean it out.
......also, it burns the paint off the intake.

so it is normal, in my VHO,

they make performance gaskets that block that off,so its very normal.

Is it just me or does it look like the rockers are on backwards?

Thanks! I had no idea hot exhaust runs through the manifold - this could be why the car ran so bad when cold. Anyway, left it alone and just bolted the 4bbl intake on. Hopefully it will be running later tonight....

Perfectly normal for a small block with a ton of miles. Normally it should be cleaned out but with today's gas it might help with drivability. One thing is the divorced choke won't work properly so you should upgrade to an electric.
