Advice for Increasing Horsepower - 318

I've got a 318 74 Satellite I did do a full rebuild on the engine, but my top end is similar to what your thinking about doing. Headers, Edelbrock performer intake, Edelbrock 600 cfm carb, and this comp cam.

Very happy with how it turn out, especially because this was my first engine build. People don't believe its 318 when they ask whats under the hood.

Was away for weekend here's the info All parts are from Summit Racing Intake Bolt kit ARP-144-2001, Gasket EDL-7276 , Carb Studs 1.70"OAL SUM-G1423, 14" Chrome Air Cleaner SUM-G300, electric choke 600CFM SUM-M08600VS, Manifold WEIAND ACTION PLUS NON-EGR WND-8007. Hope this helps

Thanks for the info Coronet...I ordered the Edelbrock 600 cfm elec choke 4bbl carb, Edelbrock Performer dual plane aluminum intake manifold, Comp high energy cam and lifter kit flat tappet .454 lift w/new timing gears, Edelbrock valve covers and the Edelbrock triangular high flow breather. Still looking for some snappy gears for the differential, but with what I've ordered so far, I hope to see a marked improvement in horsepower. The new gearing with a Sure Grip rear end will come in the future, but I'm about tapped for cash at this point. All the parts should be delivered this week and be in and operational by mid-next week.

I'm holding off on cam for right now. Not sure if I want to turn that 318 into a fire breathing tire smoker or drop a 383 in it.

best bang for the buck
Gears
intake/carb
roller rockers
shorty headers
free flowing exhaust with x or h pipe
good tune up, bump total timing...
lots of free horsepower by making sure you have everything tuned

I'm going the same route here's what I have planned for my 318.

4 barrel Edelbrok carb
4 Barrel Edelbrock intake
New cam
rebuilt 340 heads
headers
2.5" dual exhaust with H-pipe
Pertronix Flamethrower coil + conversion kit

Make sure you check the valve clearance on the cylinder bore, seems to me you have to grind a small chamfer because of the valves.

Swirl port or smaller chambered heads help the most,,,1988-92 years i think,, for stock iron,, get lucky and find these around from time to time,, no need doing much else untill you get that combustion chamber smaller. ,,, then feed them with a four barrel intake and card of your choice

here is my junkyard recipe
if your lucky and have an 8.75 go look for an old dodge truck with a slant 6 pull the pumpkin
find a junk yard 4 bbl intake and carb
mill the heads .030 avdance the cam 3 deg
put a decent set of duel exaust on and a stage 2 transgo shift kit it
