I've replaced the original trans pan on my 72 Coronet with one from Mopar Performance. No matter what I do it leaks around seal. 6 time I've had it apart. Rubber gasket, cork gasket, siliconed gasket to pan and trans. and another cork gasket. Still leaks. Any ideas :(

I'm using a Summit cast aluminum pan on my 727 with a dry (no sealer) cork gasket for a few years. Not a drop on the garage floor.

Are you completely sure it is the pan leaking? When under the car look on the left side of transmission at the shift lever seal (use a mirror) and make sure it is dry at this point, also look at the rear middle to the left of the pan look around the bottom extension housing bolt also use a (mirror), you have the reverse anchor pin that can start leaking. 1 or both of these points will make it look like the pan is leaking. The only other part would be the filler tube. If you have used sillicon and all that stuff unless you have a hole in the pan that is kinda unlikely your pan is leaking.

I put a Mopar performance deeper pan from Summit. it has the drain hole. I'm gonna take a another look under it once my garage is comfortable. Got the a/c working in there again.

I did some research and it looks like I could possibly use a 42RE truck transmission pan if this thing keeps leaking. Any thoughts on this Idea

My money is on what he said. Especially since you put on a new pan and gasket that wasn't dimpled...unless you over torqued it.

I have pan leaking problems on my 727 so I went right to the dealer and got a OE hard plastic gasket that has a rubber bead to seal. P/N 2464324AC Never a problem again.
The 42RE sure looks the same as a 904 in pictures. Check with the dealer if a gasket is available for the 42RE

I changed gasket twice, including the pan one time. It was leaking at filler tube and shift lever.

ordered 42RE pan gasket. Won't be here until end of next week though. When I can I will take pictures.

002.jpgIf you look closely it appears that it's leaking between pan and gasket.

I have three words for you "Indian Head Shellac" you can find it @ any auto parts store and it will stop your leak. Any old timer can tell you about this stuff it's the only stuff that would seal gaskets on on their mining equipment.I had the same problem out of my 2001 Dodge Dakota but it was a valve cover gasket ,It wouldn't seal I went through three gaskets and then my step dad recommend the shellac I put it on let it set up and it hasn't leaked a drop since! Try it it costs about 3 bucks, good luck.

Looking at the picture it sure looks a little wet above the pan rail. If possible try to park the car in different angles over night and see if it leaks at every angle until your gasket gets in.
Have you tried taking a hammer and lightly tap all the way around the pan?
This is something I always do every trans and engine I do.

42re is basically a 904 with an overdrive unit attached. The pan will fit but it is deeper. You would need to get the filter in the bottom of the pan. The 42 re valve filter will not fit the 904 valve body. I have seen extenders for after market deep pans.

Filter has an extension on it. I put a deeper pan with a drain plug on it. Deepness of 42RE pan not a problem

x2 on the filler tube O ring.

Common and can look like a pan gasket leak.

Also can be difficult to get on right.

Last one I had had a slight flat spot on it- enough to weep out and pool around until it dripped.

Next week I'm gonna start to rebuild front end. It will be up on stands. I'm gonna check the seals for dipstick tube and lines/ neutral safety switch. I want to put a 727 in it and shorten driveshaft but I have see about send son to his mom's for a few weeks this summer.

I would say that 90% of the trans leaks brought to me are not the pan. The fluid level is well over 1" above the pan rail when parked. Clean the entire area with brake clean, blow off with air. Dust baby powder around the trans and watch. The power will wick up the fluid, you'll see the leak area. Look carefully and follow the trail. Prime candidates, Low reverse band apply pin (can be RTV sealed in the car with a thin putty knife), dipstick O-Ring,valve body case seal, valve body throttle shaft seal, tail shaft bolts (add teflon pipe sealer), trans line fittings. Other areas that probably won't look like a pan leak are speedo cable o-ring, speedo cable itself, tail shaft snap ring access cover, output seal. These are all repairable in the car. The only leaks not repairable in the car are front pump and or seal, converter itself.

It is on four jack stands. Started disassemble frontend. I will be able to slide my fat *** under car and take a look at transmission now. Once I can see what's going on will let you all know.
