Car is correct - restored - needs paint - 70 6 pack Cuda - repainted once by previous owner, base coat clear coat - Here's the question - should I use what the factory put on the car, say a single stage Centari style paint or base coat clear coat? I'm pretty sure I know what the response will be but lets just see who has what to say - Thanks in advance for your comments...

I would and did go base clear.

A modern likeness of the original color.

Each to his own I guess. Best of luck.

I think this has been stated before. BC/CC will last longer for UV protection, But the factory used enamel. But with the advances in paint these days. A good enamel paint job can last just as long. I painted my car BC/CC over 20 years ago. If you look on my resto thread, that's what my car looks like from sitting out in the weather for most of those years. The clear did start peeling the last couple years. When I get to that stage, i'm going to paint it with enamel. My choice this round.

For the overly **** Retentive "Purist" type crowd, the original style paint will bring the best reviews, especially 100pt OEM restoration & if it's a Concourse type show car... But IMHFO for everyone else, the best paint in the factory color available today, use a better product, would be the best thing to do, it looks better than stock, but like stock, it's what it seems most people, that are going to be paying top dollar want today, over restoration so to speak... My $0.02 cents, But also opinions are like butt holes everyone has one....

The only time I shoot a single stage is if cost is a factor otherwise I would go with a base/clear. Good luck.

Go with a good base coat system

I agree with Budnicks 100%.

Today's paint products are way far superior to anything from the era when our cars were built.

They have several distinct advantages for both the painter and the end consumer. The newer base coat clear coat systems are a lot easier to spray, look 100 times better, and will last longer due to the inherent UV protectants built into the clears.

On the down side though, it will cost more. Be sure to use a quality product and you will be fine. Just don't spray the car before the body work is 100 % ready. Once it's painted any flaws will show up big time.

I always use BC / CC systems and they have a much better / deeper shine and gloss to them.

I have never heard anyone complain of a car being "too shiny". or "too straight, the factory gaps didn't look like that!!!".

Originality will only apply to a super rare over the top 100 point restoration, which I don't believe can ever be done.

The BC / CC paint would increase the sale probability.

When it comes down to a 100 point concours car, they are only original once. Paint deteriorates over time and will loose some of its true color. They have a very slight tendancy to fade, even in protected areas.

if we only had a time machine......
