waiting back to hear from modern muscle about the nag 1 but by chance does anyone know any leads on a 6speed trans out of a late model mopar i can bolt up to my 6.1. i checked with keisler and they can set me up with a complete kit. dont get me wrong it is a really nice kit but for 6k. damm thats alot of cash for that kit. i cant seem to find a 6 speed late model trans for sale anywhere. and what kind of money do they ask for. thanks guys. just trying to get a comparison.

I believe that most American made high performance models (Camaro, Challenger, Mustang, Cadillac, Viper) use the T56 tranny. I talked to the Tremec guys at a show and that's what they told me, google or check T56 on Ebay. I've also been told to stay away from Keisler, American Powertrain seams to have a good rep and Summit was selling kits made by Hurst.

What reasons did they give on avoiding Keisler? I've read mostly good but some bad, overall. But those were just forum posts/reviews, not really a good reliable barometer.

I don' t no the exact reason but it was coming from Tremec themselves (I talked to them at a show). I do know that Keisler modifies the trannies to make them an easier install, maybe they don't like the changes they make, your guess is as good as mine

The T-56's have different input shaft lengths depending on applications. I went through this when thinking about swapping one in (to spendy for me). The chevy applications will work but you have to swap the input shaft or buy a specific adapter bell housing. Just do some research before you buy.

I think the camaro's with the LS1 used the T-56 if i remember right and can be found a little more inexpensively, however by the time you factor in the cost of the input shaft change over you might as well buy the viper trans. Also the viper trans shares the bell housing configuration (again from memory and you should confirm this) but I think you can get away without buying a housing that way.

i found a used six speed viper tranny on craig list last november for 800.00

I know that it was a steal but i know most of the viper salvage yards like don sharf and cleveland pick and pull get about 1200.00 for the older six speeds .

here is my thread on my build

alrighty moparstu you talked me into it. i read your post and did a bunch of research and i pulled the trigger on a tr6060 srt8 six speed for the 6.1 HEMI going in my 70. hope to start a thread on this this winter to have up and running by spring boiling the tires.

you should be satisfied with the six speed. Happy floor mods!

My body guy just got done stuffing a 331 HEMI with a five speed in his 47 international truck...he said this will be no problem...better him than me...lol

So whats your address? I need to know where to steal it from while you are at work...

We have a CUDA in the shop that's 440 with a T56, big time floor mods.... That was an auto to start with though....
No matter what, with a top loader, you're going to have to cut the floor...

I didn't do this one personally, but I don't think it's as bad as people think. I mean it's not a 10 minute job, but cut a big hole, then make some patterns, piece it in, no biggy...

PS Found these on the Big Block Dart forum... http://www.bigblockdart.com/forum/s...ed-06-28-09&highlight=T-56+6-speed+discussion

All that for ONE more gear? Not my cup of tea. Good luck.

Well actually 2. its a 6 speed. But if you want a modern tranny with OD that will hold up to serious abuse this is about the only way unless you invest in a really spendy kit from kiesler or passion. And really the floor mods are pretty minor, you cut out a piece, move it up and add some material or make a new piece...few hours really. Not for the "bolt on" crowd but hey, who wants to be that guy anyway...

When I was 18, like thirty some odd years ago :) I built a 70RR from scratch, I put a 440 4brl from a charger, and an A833, and 8.75 from another RR with 3:55 gears and sure grip. That sucker could roll off 30mph in 4th without stumbling... With a big block, it's not necessary for the T56 unless you really want it, but with the 5.7 Hemi, that's the way to go for sure..... That T56 in the Cuda, shifts like buttah though!!!! A rock crusher never shifted like that, no matter what shifter you put in it.....
