So I pulled the bottom chrome trim from the rear window yesterday and see there is a long channel underneath it. The chrome trim piece I removed did not have any sealant on it. How the heck is this channel not just filling with water when it rains and rusting out? It has no where to run off. All that is stopping water from getting in there is this chrome trim piece. What is with that?? Are you guys adding any kind of sealant under this trim?

that is the most common area for rust. if your lucky, it will just be in the corners. i didnt put any sealer under mine, but then again, my car has never seen water.

Yup.

Just begging to rust.

Whenever I get caught in the rain (that's a LOT in FL)...

I blow out the corners (and the entire channel) with compressed air when I get home.

There has to be something that can be put in there. I know seam sealer would do it but you would probably never get the trim off again. Maybe thin weatherstrip..... I'll be adding something in there before trim goes back on.

Pretty stupid design flaw

Yup bad design. I installed a drain that goes thru truink to ground, helps a little. But this happened when i had to replace the window frame.

How is this for a crazy idea. What about packing the channel with grease(marine)? Caulks or sealants will glue to the trim and will also clog up the clips. Weather stip can't completely fill the channel. Grease will not glue it, will make future removal of trim and getting to clips no big deal, and will repel the water. Worst thing is you will need to clean it out if you want to repaint or something someday. One concern though would be if the grease could leak out somehow. Think it could work??

sounds like a good idea bandit. also will preserve the little trm clip screws that tend to deteriorate over time
