I want to get a press. I want my hammering stuff on and off days over. Looking at Harbor Freight 20 ton press for 199.00. Does anyone have one from them? Are they any good? Thanks

Coronet 14,
I own that press.
I LOVE it.

Be advised, it does go on sale for $169.00 sometimes.

Also, I joined the "Inside Track Club" and once an individual does that person gets an immediate 10% off your next ENTIRE purchase.

I have NOT had any issues/problems with it.

PS: I LOVE Coronets, but hey...who doesn't?

Yep, I've got that press also. Has worked very well for me, but then I don't use it a lot either. In my opinion, it is an excellent value for a home shop and occasional usage.

I really like this one:

It is a bit more expensive but you will be much happier with it. I didn't want to shop one out West so I found a used 25 ton model (circa 1937) and picked it up from a surplus place. I am not a huge fan of the bottle jack style press but the will get you by.

Let's see.......1/2 the capacity, MORE THAN TWICE the price, and it is still equivalent to a bottle jack style. Just has the resevoir and pump/handle located on the side.

You must have way too much money on your hands. Good for you. :icon_salut:

for 200 bones you cant beet that press.we have had on here at the shop we use about 3 to 4 times a week and is still working after a year.you only break presses when you use them wrong.

No need to be hostile here. I am simply expressing an opinion. That said if you are comparing capacity on these things how do you know what yours is if it does not have a gauge? Very scientific. The purpose of buying a better press is precision. The Dake units have nothing to do with the upside down bottle jack units. If you think that is the case you are delusional. I want things pressed on straight/true...again, just my opinion. Cancel your cable TV and buy some decent tools if you are short on cash. My tools are made in the US, don't know about the rest of you. The option of buying a used press is still out there if you wanted to go that route.

I can't believe all of you die-hard Americans go out of your way to give guys like me a hard time for buying USA-built tools and shop equipment.

Yup,
I use my Harbor Freight 20 TON 4 times per year...
On sale for $169.00

Getting ready to use it again in a week. (The 77 Gremlin is getting an upgrade, hell I paid $400 for the Gremlin! )

I'd sure love to have the BIG Arcan or the Dake but it is WAY too pricey for my budget.

Sorry, nice but not in my price range.

Sorry Jeremiah to ruffle anybodys feathers...not intentional...

The one you posted is imported, according to the site. So, its still Chinese-ium. I agree, a used american made press is nice. Most of my shop tools are used american made 50s-70s era stuff. But, its hard to beat $150 for a 20 ton press that HF sells. The steel alone is around that much. And a used press would be more than that, in most cases.

I was able to pickup the Harbor Freight 20 ton for $150. on sale about a month ago. This is the only HF tool I have ever bought, but figure for the few times it will get used I can't go wrong.

I have an old 12-ton HF A-Frame press that was $99. I got it to press the suspension bushing out of the control arms and such. It paid for itself on that first job as the machine shop wanted $25 per bushing. The down side is the bottle jack started leaking a few years ago, but a replacement was pretty inexpensive.

1938 Delta Model 620.jpgWe are cool and I totally understand. I was 30 when I bought my beater Dake 25H and figured we were going to have to put up with each other for a LONG time lol. It is was used and abused for over 70 years before I acquired it. The directions on the ram assembly say to strain some oil I never heard of through cheese cloth when filling it up. It is circa 1937 and Dake still makes a seal kit for it. Mich like my circa 1938 Delta drill press I have about the same money into my old beater press. Just thinking outside the box (stores). At the end of the day use what works. It's all good.

I have been looking for a press also,Greg Smith Equip has an air powered bottle for $239.I'm skeptical on the HF stuff-bought a $149.vise and it was total junk-poor casting the worm gear just crumpled. What would be the advantage of an air powered bottle over the hand one.? Also which is better 20 ton or 12 ??

We have that press too. definitely a good press. Have had it for years and it has come in handy for every thing possible that needs to be pressed, or crushed.....

Shop Press

I had a press on hold for me at Harbor Freight. I had to drive about 30 miles and when I got there, the store cashier said it was the last one and the box was open. They didn't tell me that before the drive.......

I agreed to buy it after we removed everything from what was left of the box. I paid for it and started loading it in my truck when I noticed something odd.... One side of the frame was bent. The side rail wouldn't lay flat in the bed of my truck. It looked like someone hit it with a fork from a fork lift. I started checking closer and the marks lined up perfect with the damage on the box.

I walked right back into the store and got a refund.

Lesson from this: Beware of open or damaged boxes...... LOL

I honestly wasn't too impressed with the metal thickness. It was a 10 or 12 ton unit with a bottle jack. The frame was made from Chinesium....

So I went to Craigslist and started searching for a good used shop press.

I found a very nice industrial 40 ton air over hydraulic press for just a little more than what the new one at Harbor Freight would have cost. Plus the used one had several additional pressing plates and fixtures that went with it.

I went to look at it and tried it out before I bought it. This thing is a beast. We had to load it into my truck with a forklift. I had to use my engine hoist to unload it once I got it home. It's now on wheels so I can roll it around in my shop.

I LOVE it. It looks to be an old press made in the US during the 50's...... and is very similar to the Industrial Black Hawk we had in the machine shop I used to work in years ago.

I just used it today installing axle bearings. Now I don't know how I ever got by without one.

Try looking for a decent larger capacity used one before committing to a smaller one. Bigger is better when it comes to presses.......

Hope this helps.

Nice score - that thing is a lot nicer than the H.F. model.

Raise your hand if you don't what you are looking at or talking about.

I had been looking for used one to start on my front end but couldn't find one. So bought the 12 ton press from HF that is on sale now and used a 25% off coupon also. I'm sure it will work fine for me and the occasional use it gets.
