I am replacing old tank with new my car had a 383 now it has a 440 I understand that the sending unit on 383 cars were a 5/16 diameter pick up tube and the 440s had a 3/8 diameter pickup tube i heard they dont interchange what does this mean? Do I have to purchase the 3/8 size sending unit or will the 5/16 size work ok? also any body have any pics of the lines and do the vent tubes with grommets go anywhere special? sorry but I took this out over 5 years ago and just cant remember where stuff goes,:ufo: thanks much!

For your own benefit... 3/8 all the way!

X2......Both those sending units fit/lock into the gas tank just the same. Only difference is the 440/HEMI (3/8") sending unit will have a vapor return port integrated into the sending unit as well. If you're not going to use it, chunk of fuel hose, bolt and a couple hose clamps and walla! Like Bigshclunk mentioned, for your own benifit, go with the 3/8". Adding more power/powerplant under your hood down the road, you're going to want that larger diameter fuel sending unit. Good luck.

thank guys do i have to replace the lines as well or do I use the current ones ?

If it's any worth, I am sing 3/8" line with the original sending unit 5/16" so that 1" of line is 5/16" lol but it works great. Hillbillys on budgets do what they have to do ;)

ok Propwash so I plug off the vapor return port with a bolt inside the fuel line and clamp it? is this right? thanks CD

Does anyone want to throw out who to buy the 3/8 sender from for best results. I know there have been issues with some of the replacement units.

Excellent question mark ... learn from experience is my motto too. I'm planning this upgrade as well and I hope Clay Dots doesn't mind if I ask a couple additional questions.

Are all replacement gas tanks created equal or are the ones from some sellers better than others? I think I saw one from rockauto for like $95 the other day.

Could we just use a vacuum nipple with a small clamp if necessary to seal of the 1/4" return line tube on the sending unit?

I know the 1/4" return line was put there for a purpose but I can't recall what it was if not emissions and I think I read years ago that there was other benefits like helping prevent vapor lock or something. I probably that wrong but definitely recall an article advocating keeping or adding the return line along with upgrading to the 3/8" line if your car didn't come with one.

i would love to hear feedback as well on the quality subject..on both, I was told to stay away from some tanks but cant recall the maker? anybody know??? whos sellin junk sending units too, you really cant go by price, sometimes you think your buying the better one cause it costs more but its the same or worst than the lesser priced part..???

Yes sir, that would do the trick. You could also crimp the port shut and weld or braze to seal if you're looking for a permanent modification. I would go with the fuel line, bolt, clamp route, being if you ever wanted to utilize that return port, it's still available.

As far as Tallhair's question, yes one factors of that return was reducing the chance for vapor lock. Now a days, it is a great idea to run a return line being a great majority of places have ethanol in the gas. Well, lets just call it as it is...corn alcohol. Anyways, our old engine designs and deadheading the fuel to the carb leads to vapor lock a lot easier with this funky veggie gas. Cycling that unused fuel back to the tank to cool down without a doubt will help with that sort of issue. As far as fuel tanks, no they're all not made equally. Typically you get what you pay for. The spectra tanks and fuel sending units Jeff sells at 521 Restoration are good. I've bought (2) of their sending units and both gave accurate fuel levels. My bird has a spectra tank as well. Great quality. The Vacuum nipple and clamp may work. I brought up the fuel hose because it's made/known to be fuel resistant and not degraded by fuel over time. I would check to see if that vacuum nipple's material is rated as fuel resistant.

Good luck fella's.

Just so you know. I put brand new vacuum nipples on my eddy carb when I bout it new (just for storage). They are dry rotted and no gas was ran through the carbs.

I purchased my sender and tank from Mancini Racing. (3/8 w/ 1/4 return). I also installed the vapor separator. 1/4" line is easy to work with. I can't comment how ever on the accuracy of the sender. I have yet to use the new tank. My car isnt road worthy yet. Good luck.

Thanks man. I'm planning to get with the return line eventually if not right up front. I'll focus on getting it running and drinking from a gas can on the floor first, then once that's proven. I'll move onto replacing the tank, sending, unit, lines etc. I'll add the vapor separator you mentioned too probably.

Get a 69. I got a 70 (Mopar man asshole out of Central Valley California) screwed me. Had to cap a vent. By the way, gas gauge will never read full again. Good luck. Do your homework and have adequate time to so the job. Those were my mistakes.

X4 on 521 Restorations. I doubt you will find better pricing anywhere, and Jeff is a great guy to deal with. Just finishing up my second tank purchase from him tonight, Sunday night and he is still working! Cudos to 521.
