I've got a 1971 Satellite with a 2bbl 318 and 904 transmission. The car seems to have sat for the better part of 2 to 2 1/2 years. There is a flare in the shift between 2-3. The filter has been replaced and fresh fluid added. It seems worse once it has warmed up. Are the bands adjustable? any suggestions on what I can do to avoid a complete rebuild? Is there a linkage or return spring that might not be properly adjusted? Thank you for your input.

Just for a cheap maybe remedy try some trany seafoam. Drive it 50 or so miles then change ur fluid again I've used in my trucks in the past and seems to work really good

The flare occurs because the front band is releasing before the 3rd clutch applies. This can be caused by the band adjustment being to loose, OR it's worn out along with the 3rd clutches. You can try tightening the front band up. Loosen the locking nut, tighten band until you bottom out, back the adjustment out 1 1/4 turns then lock down. You'll see the adjustment on the ouside of the case on the drivers side in front of the linkage.

I'll try both, I also found another option too. Apparently the linkage might need adjustment.

The third gear clutch pack also is applied in reverse, looks like a rebuild is in your future

Well. That killed my summer. At least for now. Estimate is $1200.00 to overhaul. CRAP. only got about 60 Miles on her this year.

holy crap! you can find a better price than that! i have a guy locally that will do a 904 or 727 for $400 complete! ask around and try to find an older crusty guy from back in the day who know's these trannys

just out of interest where are you in the great white north?

I'm in Winterpeg. I see you're in Kingston. Do you ever listen to Hits 104.3? My Friend is the morning guy, Buzz Collins. I'm working out a deal for a replacement trans, but I will have to get it tested.(Line pressures) I still don't have a place to install, although I'd like to be part of it. I'm planning on rebuilding the original trans to attach to the original engine when I pull it out. The replacement trans is attached to a 318 with a 360 4bbl intake and quadrajet(I think) carb. Needs an overhaul, planning a stroker build. Just can't seem to get ahead though. At least the body is good. LoL

I too am in Winterpeg, trans tech on Plessis can help with checking out that trans, will even test drive car to help diagnose the issues.

Slightly better, they quoted $1000.00 Not looking good. I guess I'll have to work some OT or sell some more of my diecasts and stuff.

A friend from my congregation who works as a mechanic offered to work with me on rebuilding the Trans. We pulled it out today. It felt good to be a part of the action. I cleaned it up, and we mounted it on his repair stand. He's going to open it up tonight or tomorrow to see the damage. I have a rebuild kit and a shift kit on the way from Rock Auto. One it's re-installed we are looking at bending some nice Dual exhaust.

Thats good to hear. When you said reverse went out I knew you lost the front clutch that applies in 3rd gear and reverse. I was going to ask if you could pull the trans yourself and save some money but this is even better for you. Good luck with the overhaul. Ron

Thanks. He called me today, he dis-assembled it, but every thing looks OK. He's thinking it might be the valve body but not sure. we'll see what happens.

Well it turned out to be a seal. The grip material on the clutch was all worn away except for a very small amount. It hadn't heated up enough to burn either. It's all buttoned up with a nice shift kit installed and back mounted where it belongs. Too wet up here for a road test right now (dirt, scratch that. Mud roads on his farm for about a mile to gravel road and another 2 miles before pavement. Thats ok, it gives us time to finish up the 2.5 inch exhaust with Thrush glass pack mufflers.
