Greetings,
I am sure this has been an age old question relative to how many quarts of oil does a stock 440 takes. I have read many postings before I changed my oil in my new classic for the first time so I purchased 5 quarts of oil plus a K&N HP3001 filter. At the end of my work I started the car and let it sit for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes the dipstick was right at the ADD mark so I reluctantly installed 1 more quart of oil. Dipstick now reads FULL.

The problem I am having is that most manuals and past forums say it should be 5 quarts with filter. It looks like the stock dipstick and a factory Mopar oil pan. It is a 440 E Series block from 1969 that came out of a C class Polara or another large car. But who knows what dipstick and oil pan was P9030197.jpgs really used to rebuild the engine. With these non-numbers matching classics its anyone's guess what you really got.

any comments appreciated.

ps: how would I tell if I have one quart too many in engine even though dipstick reads FULL ?

my stock pans are 4 plus 1 if changing filter

Most of the BB pans such as the 402 are 4qts plus 1 w/filter which I call a 5qt pan. Early Hemi pans were 6qt and 68-71 Hemi were 7qt. The 72B 854 is a 7 qt. Truck pans are 6qt but aren't a center sump pan.
The pan in the above pic has a deeper sump than the 402's and such.

Thanks for quick response. I am glad I posted the photos. I never thought to see if by chance oil pan had some sort of part number stamped into it.

Thanks again........

Some have the last 3 of the part number on them.

My pan came off a 1972 or 73 400 engine. I checked it when off the car, and it held 6 QUARTS to the bottom of the windage tray. So I run 5 quarts in the pan, 1 in the filter, for a total of 6 on an oil and filter change. And when I check it after changing oil, it comes right to the FULL mark on the dipstick. It is noticeably larger than a 70 Super Bee pan which has the baffles in it. That pan takes 4 quarts, 5 with filter. So I feel it best to go with the full mark on the dipstick. I'm sure I could put 6 quarts in the pan with no problems, but its working fine as it is so will leave it at 5 in the pan.

I think my pan has a 699 stamped into the bottom. When changing pans be sure to use the pick up tube that came on the motor the pan came off of.

699 is a C-body pan that also works well fitting a BB into an A-body. Should be 5qts w/ filter.

Now I am confused. Stock 440 pan from 69 Coronet R/T. 5 or 6? I don't trust the Chinese chrome stick my builder put in. 4 quarts shows full with filter change so I add one more.

69 Coronet should have a 4 quart pan, 5 with filter change. The oil filter will hold about 1 quart.

What number is stamped on your pan, Dennis? Is it 402?

So you adding 1 quart over full?

comparing yours to mine .......mine has a longer front to back bottom. Does yours hold 4 qts + 1 in the filter.

1969 440 came with the 402 pan which is 5qts with filter.

You talkin to me? lol. The 187 in the pic is a 5qt w/ filter C-body pan.

I will see which pan I have. All I know is that my sons 1970 Super Bee takes 5 quarts with oil and filter to bring it to the full mark. 402 pan I think. And my 451 (400 block) takes 6 quarts with filter to bring it to the full mark. And we both have the exact same chrome dipstick and tube. We got them at Advance Auto Parts. But my oil pan has no baffles like his does, and is noticeably larger.

1970 hemi, 440 hp and 440+6 where 6+1 qts all others 4+1
1969 440 and 440+6 where 4+1 (402 pan) not sure about hemi.

I agree. 71 was the same as 70 and the OP's pan looks like the Hemi pan. The 402 was used on the 440 through 69 and on the 383 through 71.

Hello.
Sorry for grabbing out this old post. But I have similar problem.
I have a 440 engine from 1969. And I have a Moroso 7 quart oil pan.
And I´m using a noname aftermarket dipstick....
How much oil should I put in the engine? I would like to know it one time, so I can put a mark on my dipstick. I´m not so firm with the us - units of measurement.
Does a 7 quart oil pan mean, that all in all I have to put 7 quarts in the engine? Or is it just how much goes in the pan, plus filter and engine itself?
