DO all A12 Coronets have a VIN that starts WM23 E63? I have read on this site that E63 is for 383 engines as all A12 start as a 383 then get a 440 six pack. How can I tell if it is a true A12 and not a 383 clone?
Thanks,
Mark

Correct, they are all WM23 or WM21 (hardtop or post body style). All have E63 on both the fender tag and broadcast sheet. The A12 stamped on the tag is what overrides the 383 engine. Also the engine code in the VIN number is M (5th digit), which for 1969 was the 440+6bbl/six pack in the B-body line (440 4bbl in the A body). Otherwise, the body is the same as a 383 car, no torque boxes like a hemi, no 3/8" fuel line (they did have the 3/8" pick up in the tank). But an original will have the 1/4" fuel return line.

Thanks, I did not notice the numbers above the VIN at first. It has 23 A12 above the VIN so I would assume it is a real A12 unless the tag is faked.

Unless I am mistaken all A12 cars were built at the Lynch Road Assembly plant and will have a A for the seventh digit of the VIN. So the VIN numbers would start WM23M9A WM21M9A RM23M9A or RM21M9A.
