I have a 1967 Charger, the original 383is not in the car. The pad just under the distributor only has 4 3 stamped on it. Any know any more details, year, etc of engine?

Sorry for the fat fingers, 383

The casting date on the 383 will be just behind the motor mount on the driver side.

Thanks, I am not seeing it, have to put it up in the air to get a better look. Trying to figure out timing

That's the date the engine was assembled so depending on the casting number.....
The pad should have 383 on it too preceded by a capital letter, for example C='67, D='68 etc.

Here are a couple of examples and a 383 casting date.

As for the timing...give it what it likes. Today's gas is different and the engine probably has some wear not to mention the distributor could also be well worn plus each engine is different even if it's the same size.

The raised deck engines have the size stamped on a pad on right front of engine just in front of the intake pan gasket rails. As in the 440 pictured above. 383 is front of the distributor. Or you can give us the block casting # and date, and we can tell you all about when built, and size.
