Ok, so I may be showing my age here...the last time I had a "custom" exhaust system (manifold-back) installed, starting from straight tube (i.e. bent on site to fit the car), I walked out with duals, glass-packs and chrome tips for around $150.

I dropped by a well known custom exhaust shop in Houston today and was quoted between 650 and 800 for the same job. This time I'll be coming off the headers, installing a flange, and going with basic (cheap) glass-packed mufflers. I want a simple chrome tip (until I can find something "right" for the roadrunner--and pony up for it!).

I was really thinking that $300 should 'git-er-done'....apparently I'm out of touch.

Is it just that the art of exhaust-bending is so nearly lost that it's that expensive nowadays, or does this kind of money for what used to be considered a simple exhaust job sound out of line?

What say y'all?

I'm with you cbunt. I have had several complete duals from manifolds or headers out the back with mufflers included and hangers etc for under $200-250 .. but not in the last 20 years LOL.

I'm thinking if they want

maybe the TTI's are the way to go and I hate ugly plumbing and those guys do it right and will last for the price.

X3. TTI is quality and mandrel bent (ie. no crushing at bends).

Or, Buy a kit from Summit and install it.

TTI is the "gold-standard" for exhausts as far as fit-and-finish for our cars. I personally have not seen any better production system. I have seen some great custom jobs, but not a better off-the-shelf system.

I used Pypes pipes from Summit on my driver with their mufflers. Fit nice and look good. They were professionally installed and fully welded. The idle has a rumble but are pretty quiet at cruise speed. HTH

1969CoronetR/T, have you used those exhaust from TTI before? I'm going to have to get some for my GTX in the near future and was trying to get your feedback from this company. Do you know if they sell the tips to?

Yes, I believe its robbery or rape. But I guess pipe benders gotta make up the salary difference between them and over paid CEO's.

Yes you are showing your age...I'm guessing you had something bent up in the early `80s? And yes, like so many other things (radiator rodding out/ repair, frame straightening, chrome plating, electrical wiring trouble-shooting, rear-end rebuilding, etc.) the art is getting lost. Sucks I know! Used to be you could find these services in even the smallest of towns. Now you are lucky if you can find one within driving distance!

As for pricing, you are actually on the low end if it's a well known shop. You may find a bit lower price hitting up one of the 'se habla espanol' shops there in TX.

I can't say enough great things about Tom at Accurate.
Knowledgable and very fair. Great people and prices comparable as any place else.

I have the their headers with the 3" X exhaust with Dynomax mufflers and tips on my R/T. I also had their complete system (headers, tubes, muffler) on a 1971 Demon 340 and both times the fit is laser straight and flawless. The mufflers could be a little more aggresive, but have a great rumble that is not overly loud or obnoxious. I would not look anywhere else for exhaust systems.

I just purchased a dual exhaust system with an H-pipe from manifolds to the rear bumper from Classic Exhaust in Ohio for $330. 2 Turbo mufflers were included with the setup and came with aluminized pipe. I have 2 Flowmasters that I may swap out with the turbos. Not a bad price & everything is ready to install.

x2 DIY the best bet, anybody use the system they sell in summit they had that on special a while back for around 200.

Thanks Lowhound but I'm still a ways off from ordering. Appreciate it though!

Got mine from Accurate, a real nice system, with correct bends. He must have the factory jigs. Comes with correct clamps and hangers. But then if you're plumbing of headers and do not care about correctness then probably si senior at the local muffler shop is the way to go.

Thank you all for your replies and input. Based on what I'm seeing from the vendors, that bid isn't really unreasonable -- I'm just dealing with the sticker shock. I've been holding off on doing the exhaust because I am trying to decide whether i want to trade out the headers I have for something that actually lets me have access to minor components like spark plugs, starters and steering boxes, or just roll with them...but (long story) it's time to go ahead and do it, and retrofit anything I decide to do down the road.

.

And therein lies the rub...last full manifold back job I did was back in around '90 or '91. I did a cat-back on a Thunderbird with dronematers for about $350 back in around '98. Slipped a glasspack in place of the factory muffler on my diesel dodge in '03, and I think I paid $150 for that job. I guess when I start adding it up, it's not a out of line as it first sounded.

Yep, Not too far off -- last full manifold back job was in 90 or 91...and in Waxahachie, TX, and welded with a torch, not a MIG welder :)

And I don't have a problem with the "se habla espanol" shops -- The car's a driver, and the exhaust just needs to be (A) good enough and (B) not in the way of other stuff under the car -- I just haven't found them all here in Houston (I just moved here a few years ago...I know where ALL the patch-em-up/roll-em-out joints are in Dallas LOL

If you're able, get a setup from one of the vendors listed, & do it yourself.

That's not out of the question...I can weld & cut, I just don't have the tools to bend the pipes (nor do I have the "art" of it) -- but between my buddy's porta-power and his shop's bender, I should be able to make any "tweaks" that need to be made...
