bought a 68 440 a couple years ago, in the process of building it now , when I got it I noticed there were no vin stamping near pan rail or by bellhousing, today I found this number and it looks like maybe a part number on the underside below the starter , does this number make sense to anyone? engine id.JPG

I don't know what that is but look at the top rear of the block .. the VIN serial # should be there on 68 RB blocks

Only if they were cast after December '67 will the VIN be stamped on it.
The PT=Trenton engine plant and than the human doing the stamping mistakenly thought he was working with a 361 for a minute. Not sure about the second P, may also be a mistake? 2379 is the date of assembly February 1, '68(there should be a VIN # on this block unless maybe it was a replacement). The last 4 digits are supposed to be a build sequence meaning 2334 engine built but I don't know how often they started back at 0001.

P for Premium fuel.

The 2 1 assembly date should also be stamped on the pad in front of the valley pan.
IF the engine was an HP assembly, you should see an HP stamp on the pad also.
Check the rear of the bell housing by the oil sending unit for the VIN.

I thought it might be for premium fuel but figured that would only have been on the top pad. Thanks for the info!

My 68 R/T motor has the serial number on the top rear of the engine slightly off center due to the casting rib in that location so it's slightly on the drivers side. The 727 has a corresponding stamping with the serial number directly opposite.

The SPD is 911 so it was scheduled for build Sep 11, 1967. The motor would have been assembled up to a few months prior to that date.

I have had the impression that it wasn't until '68 that the vin stamps started...

Interesting info. I saw a block recently that had an 8 after the 440 where this one had a P. What would the 8 mean? Also on the id pad it has a C all by its self. Any idea on that one? Thanks.

Matt, there are early built 1968 models that do have a VIN stamp. It does not appear that stampings were prevalent at all plants until calendar year 1968. The issue of what engines got VINS and when certain plants started stamping the blocks is unresolved.

I have yet to see any credible research on the topic.

Hello, Are you saying that your 440 block has no serial numbers on it?

Old thread. Start a new one and you will get lots of input on that subject. I started one several months ago about something similar.
