Brake Drum Spring?

What is the purpose of the big spring that is wrapped around the outside of the front brake drum?

It's to absorb any chatter, vibration, harmonics when the shoes are making contact with the drum.

same idea as when you turn a drum.wrap something around it to prevent harmonics and therfore vibration.silencer,is what its called.
