I'm in the process of getting a new aluminum six pack manifold. I need to prep & paint it. The color is obviously Hemi Orange. What's the best process to prep & paint it. Is it something i can do myself or i also have access to a dealer paint shop. And the manifold is new, so no stripping of old paint.

Cheap and easy way: Wipe it down really well with Dupont Metal Prep or another cleaner specifically for pre paint cleaning. Use a rag that doesn't leave 'fuzz' behind. Put the rattle can and the manifold in the sun to warm it up or use a heat gun. Two light coats and then a heavier one. No need to spend a lot of time and money unless it's a 100 point restoration.
You can use masking tape to mask off the carb mounting flanges or just wipe them down with lacquer thinner after you paint it.

Thanks for the info. But should there be a primer coat of something first?

Chuck

It's been my experience that if you use the right cleaner and a good quality engine enamel that a primer isn't necessary on a cast aluminum surface.

Meep, Since I'm no longer in Colorado, your depiction of mountains in the above post brought tears to my eyes...thanks. lol.

E19.jpgIMG_7816.JPGracecar 474.jpgSingle stage Urethane out of the gun over epoxy primer. It will never flake off. Gas won't hurt it. I've got some engines that look this good that I sprayed 15 years ago.

Is that the infamous Rat Roaster? Looks awesome dvw and the M/T's look pretty old school cool too. Any more you've done?

It's an Indy cross ram. Very similar to a Hemi Rat Roaster. Spray bomb comparison. This one looked good until jet changes allowed fuel to spill, killed it.

That looks fantastic, Doug. The only problem is that the average guy in his home garage doesn't have the equipment or talent to do what you did. Again, if you need a show car finish, take it to someone like Doug to paint or have it powder coated. I've done it the way I've outlined for many, many years and always get compliments on my motor. BTW, I use Duplicolor engine enamel.

Ah , but this was done in a home garage. Cheap spray gun and urethane. Not done in a booth. I used spray can for years, just not as durable.
