Disassemble hood

Has anyone taken a 70 charger hood apart ? I 've drilled all the spot welds out but I'm unable to seperate the two pieces

There are a crapload of spot welds, and there is also sealer between the panels to prevent them from rattling against each other. Why do you want to take them apart if I may ask?
 
The hardest part was the line of adhesive that was still doing its job at the rear of the hood just in front of the vents on the '71 hood. I literally had to cut through that with Japanese pull saw. You've got to make sure that the adhesive aren't still holding before separating the parts or you'll distort the skin.

Here's the hood. Somebody forgot the hood pins twice once was me. All the spot welds are drilled out and I have worked a putty knife along the front edge. Any suggestion ?

Buy another used hood. Mate, that one is stuffed. You will spend an eternity trying to make that one fit on the car and get all those ripples and creases out...trust me, I've been there.
 
'The Bozo' that used to be next to me, acted upon his customers request to take apart his 69 Barracuda Deck Lid to blast the insides, as I said Bozo is too nice of a word, it, and the car ended up at MuscleRodShop, they put about 40 or more hours in just the Deck Lid to get it right, I'd say don't take it apart.
 
To be honest I don't think that one is worth saving. I know its a one year only hood but you should try and find another and set that one aside as a last resort. By the time you take all those creases out you will have stretched that metal out to the point you might not even get the two pieces back together and looking right, not to mention making it fit on the car properly.
 
I took mine apart on my 70 RR, had to replace the bottom. It was a little work but it turned out good. Put your bottom piece on the car before you start welding it together and you can get the fit right on it. Good Luck Ronnie
 
Easiest way is to grind the outside edge of the hood, all the way around. This will expose the 'sandwich' of layers (hood skin, frame layer and the overlap area).

You can then use an air chisel to pry the skin and folded overlap off of the frame.

Now, getting the new skin onto the frame is a different story...before the advent of new reproduction skins, the used one had to be fitted to the frame and the outside edges stitch-welded back together in a seam, ground smooth and painted.

So, the lesson here is, just find a new hood.
 
Sure am glad you posted this thread Tony. I pulled my trunk lid apart to repair it and panel guy suggested we do same to the hood so as to be able to clean the surface rust that is between the frame and skin. Won't be doing that now. Will strip the paint off and may look at getting it acid dipped and galvinised. Hope that won't destroy the internal adhesive.
 
Well it's been done. Was looking for info on doing it and found this thread. Luckily the filler that supports the skin gave up long ago and mine came apart rather well.20140427_154054.jpg20140427_154125.jpg
