i am just starting out, i have a 66 charger, original 383 4bbl, automatic, great shape cosmetically, needs updates mechanically, i need to get to know someone who knows this year of charger, ive been working on lights hide away, got them working, My first project is to upgrade ignition system and distributor, but first i want to upgrade the engine harness, will the original work or do i need an upgrade to run a newer distributor and MSD and coil, then i want to upgrade carb and intake , i want to rid of vacuum operated components is what some car guys tell me??, headers too, but how or who do i talk to to learn what works , what doesnt??
Replacing original parts is simple, but to upgrade i need alot of questions answered so i can continue progress
under the hood,

Welcome!
Having just purchased a 66 myself a few months ago, I can tell you this is the place to get great info....

Please don't get the wrong idea, but why do you want to "update" the systems you mentioned?
If your vehicle is primarily original, it has far more value and integrity with those stock components intact.
Most of those stock components function very well for street use.
The 335 HP that a 383 4bbl system with the factory carb & cast iron intake/exhaust manifolds put out is a respectable amount. More than enough to make that Charger fly down the road.....
Now if the vehicle was not originally equipped with that big block or it is missing many of its original components, I could understand, but in my opinion, your 1st generation Charger is far better off as close factory original as possible.

the 383 was 325hp, not 335....

there are no vacuum components that you can "get rid of"....headlight motors are electric.

the carb is fine for what you are doing with the car, headers are a headache, put yer money elsewhere...

The 66-67 are the most expensive to restore, I have 2, I know this all too well

Welcome!
For the ignition I would suggest getting a conversion kit from Mancini Racing. It will be cheaper than all the MSD stuff and just as reliable.

Your factory wire harness will work with the electronic conversion kit. Or if you wanted to replace with a new reproduction harness you can check out Year One. They have harness with the Mopar electronic harness built in.

Also check this out. Click on the link and you'll find a list of wiring diagrams. There are schematics for our cars. Print them off or download, they will save a ton of headaches.

As for intake, if your motor is stock an good upgrade would be an Edelbrock Performer. You might be able to find a used one for $100-125, put an ad up here, someone might be able to help you out.
As for car you'll get lots of suggestions. I prefer Holley's and would get a 750cfm with vacuum secondary. You can get them with manual chokes or electric.
Headers, how do you want to spend? ha ha ha They are all over price wise. TTI's being one of the most expensive but fit like a glove I'm told. Have heard good things about Headman Elite's, Summit racing has them.
I have bigger tube Hookers on my car and they were a pain to install, but they were free! I've had luck using regular Fel-pro gaskets and Ultra Copper RTV to keep the leaks at bay. There are soft copper and aluminum gaskets too.
