Continuing my topic of paint since you guys have enlightened me on my paint being enamel paint instead of lacquer on my 68 GTX what is the difference in the two paints?

Is enamel paint still being used, if so is people still using it?

Do you guys think it is easy to match?

What obstacles will I have?

I know back in the 90's I used to be a Dupont Jobber and used to mix Centari Enamel, Lucite Lacquer, Emron Polyeurethane enamel, Cronar Enamel and Chromabase. These are the different types of paints that Dupont use to make. But I don't know now. The difference between Lacquer and Enamel is lacquer is faster to dry and thinner which requires more coats to get the desired shade and tone of color depth. Like painting candy. Enamel though is a little more durable and less coats of paint to reach a more desirable shade and tone but requires more drying time and holds it's color without fading longer in hotter more adverse temperatures. Centari enamel too is also single stage and does not require clear coating, it shines as is and thus makes it very easy to paint. As for Lucite lacquer you need to clear coat after paint to get the desired shine, but has more depth and beauty. The one thing I don't like about Lacquer paints though is that it's not as durable through the years. I know in Guam it's more humid and lacquer tends to start fading and cracking after about 2 years. Doesn't hold up to more extreme temperatures above 90*F. IMHO most factories save money painting enamels on the production vehicles because it requires less coats with beautiful depth and color and less time painting, thus equals more vehicles painted in a shorter period of time. It's all about production. This is just my opinion now as it's been a very long time since I last did any kind of welding, body work and painting since my last time in 1994. 24karat man.

I would be suprised if you can even get Lacquer anymore. I'm doing mine in Acrylic Urethane from Summit Racing because Dupont has priced themselves above my budget.

Lacquer is still around, it is expensive and can ALWAYS be reflowed by heat and solvent, which is why it fades and cracks. Lacquer is 60's technology, enamel is 70's. Use a good urethane basecoat/clearcoat or urethane single stage if it is a solid color. If you really want the best, use a polyurethane. Keeping the car? Use something good. Selling the car-use enamel. Your best bet is to buy the paint from a local jobber, buy less than you think you need, you can always buy more. By the way, did you know that Single Stage black is blacker then basecoat black? Ask me why if you are going black.

Lacquer has long been eclipsed by modern urethanes. Go with the new stuff and always wear a respirator.
