what years and engine sizes did ma MOPAR do this nonsense????????:soapbox:

Yep, and not just MoPar. It was called the silent chain. I have seen nylon top sprockets on 60's and 70's engines. And have seen the nylon inside of plenty of oil pickups, including all the way to the con rod oiling holes on a BBC. The oil holes were plugged solid with nylon bits.

The hi-po small blocks didn't use these.....and some hi-po big blocks didn't either.

I had a 70 440 RR that had a nylon gear. I have a 71 440 that i'm pretty sure has a nylon gear. I parked it when the oil pressure light came on. I think the screen is clogged.

yea, was pretty common back then for the plastic gear

gears

Pulled apart a '66 383 that had the nylon gear as well.
I did a bunch of them. nylon gears are ok, but they do wear out.Double row timing chains are reserved largely to high performance engines. They are more noisy, which was normal. In other words around 97% of mopars had nylon gears.

I always thought HP Big blocks had metal gears and non HP ones had nylon covered but only after a certain year. Anyone know when it started at the factory? Sounds much earlier than I would have thought

My 56' Plymouth had steel, WHOA! back there. I saw nylon in early sixties cars, but really prevelant with the LA engines, and on. and they seemed to fail more quickly back then.

I had one in a big block ford. It went to crap fast with a cam upgrade !

In the 70's it was common to find cars with bent valves, big blocks especially. When the gears shredded, it was while going down the road. usually after the engine speeds up. then, bingo. I would pull the Intake off, and the pushrods would be like a pretzel. Bent valves, plastic in the oil pan, etc. FUN!
