Ok guys, Ive done a bunch of research on trying out what to buy for my 1970 roadrunner project. I plan on replacing the engine harness and front wiring harness, distributor, etc. Here is what I want to do, please advise on what parts you would recommend to buy.

70 RR - 383 mild rebuild with edelbrock intake and holley 750 carb.

I want to run a pertronix Ignitor with a flame thrower coil. I need recommendation on which distributor to buy. Dont really want or need the pertronix billet one - the stock look is fine for this build. I have looked at reman or new MOPAR distributors, but does anyone sell one without the points etc inside since Im going to change those out to pertronix anyway? Or sell with pertronix already installed?

I was planning to change to the newer style Mopar electronic ignition box - orange 6000 rpm one should be fine. I plan on buying the "updated" wiring engine harness that changes to the newer style electronic ignition that will work with the orange mopar box.

My understanding of putting in the pertronix is that it eliminates the need for a ballast resistor and I should splice together the wiring to and from the ballast resistor. Since I am going with pertronix instead of points and buying a new engine harness, does anyone make an updated electronic ignition engine harness that does not have the wires going to the ballast resistor that I am not going to use anyway?

So many questions, thanks for the help

To answer your harness question. Nobody makes the upgraded harness to eliminate the ballast but it is simple to do. I decided I didn't want to cut a new harness so I made a couple wires with female connectors to go into the ballast plugs. You'll want to go with M&H for your manufacturer of the harness. I believe Year One and Classic Industries carry them.

For my ignition system I went with FBO. I have had zero issues and the system has run flawlessly. FBO distributors are curved and set according to the specs you provide. I believe what dictates a ballast or not is not the distributor but the coil. Upgraded coils require a full and constant 12v.

Thanks Eagle one. I can do the ballast elimination splice, just thought maybe somebody made a clean harness as I cant be the first one to do this conversion. I plan on using the pertronix 40k flame thrower coil as it looks like it works well in conjunction with their ignitor kit.

I may do a "dummy" ballast resistor just to complete the stock appearance. Im not building this as a billet style hotrod, just a somewhat stock appearance with mild engine upgrades.

I looked at the FBO system, but I think it is probably more than what I need for this build.

DO you know if the upgrade ignition conversion harness comes with a two prong or 4 prong ballast resistor?

thanks

Mine came with a 4 prong. I have been thinking about doing a dummy ballast as well so it looks a little cleaner although I would have just one more thing hanging off my firewall.

See the Ron Francis post. M&N has everything you need to do this job....

Do you have the original points style dist. For this car? If not look at O Reillys,Autozone, etc for a points style dist. and install the pertronix in place of the points and make sure to order the correct pertronix coil for the ignitor. Bypass the ballast resistor if necessary.
