440 source parts.. BEWARE

As a business owner operating a machine and engine shop, I don't even offer "fit to budget" parts. The reason is, it gives people the chance to set themselves up for failure. This will, no doubt, be a problem for me that is totally avoidable.

I just got in a set of Isky EZ roll lifters for a Hemi project. Sure, they cost $1000 more than the Chinese bargain lifters, BUT, both myself, the customer AND Isky all get real good nights sleep.

These bargain parts offer people who's horsepower ambitions far exceed their budget to set themselves up for heartache and financial loss. Doing it twice always costs more than doing it right once.

In my shop, we are almost "import free" on parts. We only use an occasional crank or rods on a low HP build. In time, that will no longer be an option though.

Sorry to hear of your recent loss, and the problems with your engine. It's tough to see things like this happen to people that have good intentions. I hate to think of people getting "soured" from the car hobby by bad luck with sub-standard parts. We all lose.

I have to say as long as I have been building Mopars, I have never had a problem with 440 source, they even come recommended by Horsepower TV, they have a special kit to take a 400 motor and stroke it with a 440 crank kit and custom bearings, did it to my 1972 Roadrunner which now has 28000 trouble free miles on it, really should work on the negative bashing, are not enough US company's trying to make it work for us gear heads out there. Good luck with your project. DT[/QUOT

Almost 4 years old thread... You can't always believe what you read in complaint especially, people have an agenda & jump the gun before a resolution can be had too sometimes... IIRC They are under new ownership & management, for quite a few years now, they also have a line of premium 100% USA Made "Platinum" products too, some people seem to complain parts prices being way to high, someone comes out with cheap parts/alternative, then people buy cheapest parts they can, then they blame it on the parts supplier, when they could spend a little more $$$ in the 1st place on better parts... I've had great luck with www.440source.com, they have had some issues like any company does, I haven't had many with them thou... I did have some issues, that killed an engine, because I went with the cheap original Stealth Heads on a engine {Stealth's long story, they are supposedly much better now, I won't use them thou, I'll step up to the next price level, when it comes to heads & valve-train pieces, not worth what you save, they have their place just not for me} that I was building/running, they actually made it all good too, cost me time, machine work, porting & hassle thou... I've had quite a few builds with Platinum series 100% USA Made parts from them, mostly not full-on racecars either, for those I go with premium race parts... I've always pretty much had great luck & great customer service, most any problems that arise can be caught by an experienced & competent engine builder/machine shop too... good luck & Happy MoParing

You guys know I've been mulling over changing heads on my 440 in an attempt to lower my ET. I'd been thinking about the Stealth heads vs. the RPM heads vs. ported iron.

Well now, 440Source has made my decision easier by raising the price of their heads another $100 to $1100 per pair.

$1100
+ 100 to replace locks and retainers (necessary on any cam over .510 lift according to 440Source).
+ 100 to replace springs (necessary on any cam over .510 lift according to 440Source).
+ 100 for thick wall 5/16 pushrods so I don't have to grind for pushrod clearance = $1400 (not counting labor to R&R the hardware).

$1400 vs. $1500 Edelbrocks that won't need any of the above for my mild .534 lift cam (surf around and you can find cheaper prices than $1600 at Summit or Jegs) and my decision on which aluminum heads to save up for just got a little easier. Bonus that the Edelbrocks flow a little better than the Stealths OOTB.

lmao who the hell dug up this one from the archives? lol this poor bastard had a run of bad luck. that really sux. wondering if there was another underlying issue that caused his big failure? All my 440s stuff is still working keeping fingers crossed, although I have been looking at other rockers and better springs, just trying not to over rev my motor so it will last until that day of head work with new better stuff can be done. As far as being budget minded with high hopes lol please keep in mind that not all of us are delusional about what we are buying and what are the potential drawbacks. As I just stated, in the future I would like to upgrade with head work and better parts, but for now what I have put together works fine and is actually pretty fast ;) We who have little but want to have fun have to be creative with our funds in order to even get close to the goal, so a source like 440s supplying parts at the lower costs is a god send. Even the poor like to go fast my friend ;)

Haha, I always wondered how to revive an old thread.

What's the average Joe going to do? I want to use quality name brand parts, go buy them and then find they are off shore parts with name brands on them. Just a fer-instance, buying good hyd. lifters for a stock or mild build. Where do you get them?................................MO

LMAO, it was the "Mopardudes" first post. Wow he went far in looking into the sites past. I can dig a old dug up thread. Even better when the info coming is good and updated.

Pick your parts, pay your monies, get what you pay for.
This holds true 90% of the time. No company is perfect. Checking the new parts out is your job to make sure it is a good part or your qualified machinists call.
Building engines are expensive and good parts are rarely cheap. It would be great to pick up a new forged stroker crank for $200, but that's not reality.

If your bitchin about the prices of parts, then, Perhaps this is not the hobby for you and plastic models should be.

I'm sort of glad that this post was dug up again. I've been talking with some machine shops to get my 440 built. They all have told me that 440 Source is junk, but when I ask them how many engines they have built using their parts the answer has always been "We don't use them because they are junk!" This begs the question, if you haven't built engines with 440 Source parts then how do you know they're junk? The answers vary from "Well they're Chinese parts" to "A friend of a friend of a friend had bad luck with them". I was starting to wonder if they really don't have the quality I'm looking for but now I'm seeing what you guys who have used the parts are saying about 440 Source, and it all seems to be positive. It's always a little scary buying something expensive for the first time from a company you have never used before. I have noticed trends with them like bad water pump housings, super stealth and stealth heads not performing as expected, and lifter problems. It does seem like everyone likes their stroker kits. So maybe I will get a 512 kit from them.

Sorry your having problems. Did you build this yourself? If you built it like your typing and grammar skills, I can see why you have problems! Please learn some punctuation, spelling and the use of the shift key. I have a hard time reading that!

That's about an ignorant *** statement right there.

I've been in the auto industry now for 25 years. I've worked next to some brilliant techs who couldn't do a write up on the back of a repair order to save his life, but the service writer was still able to interpret it and put it in the system. Yet, many of them were the go to guys in the shops for every complex problem.

My old man is 72 years old and a high school drop out. He needs a dictionary to spell anything. But he was making cars go fast back in the '50's and is still one of the go to guys in the area for engines and transmissions, particularly Mopar. When he lived in TN he was the go-to guy for engine and trans overhauls in his area.

So, if you come on here and look for advice for your build and someone with a lot more knowledge replies with a post that doesn't contain proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation are you gonna dismiss his reply as stupidity simply because you don't have the mind to be able to interpret it, even though it just might be the best advice you get?

It's you're . As in "you are." Maybe before you start criticizing people's grammar and punctuation you proof read your own stuff.

I agree with BigBlock61. I for some reason was also wary of Source 440 and I think the reason was from bits and pieces I read on old post here and other Mopar sites. This disturbs me because in the years that I have been using the Web and ordering parts and such I thought I had learned to really check things out before making a judgment on something. I guess we are all only human and this discussion has taught me to try and be more open minded to different points of view and experiences. Okay, as my wife would ask me are you done preaching at us yet - We done.:werd:

Funny, I was thinking the same thing about you when I read your post cracking on the OP (and now, everyone else in the thread) for not being as edumacated as you.

I find this in poor taste. Who made you teacher? I don't think he needs your smart assed criticism.I would much prefer reading bad grammar than a post belittling another member. You've been warned.

OK...Daredevil and ramenth...You both can back it off a little here. No need to start something that is unnecessary. And from a Mod to boot!!!! I totally agree with 69a100 even if he is my Brother. 99% of the posters on this forum and others cannot and do not take the time to formulate a complete and understandable sentence. I do not call what he wrote "belittling". Pure and concise. I don't like to have to say this but we may have to re-examine this "warning" and if need be take it up a notch off topic. I await your reply...cr8crshr
