Interior Roof Rust What to Do.

I’m restoring a 1948 Plymouth; I have interior roof rust its surface rust not imbedded. Is there a way to remove the rust or can I put a primer over it without sanding. Eventually I will put a head liner over it but I just don’t want to start sanding if I don’t have to. What’s my best approach?

Use an ecapsulator/converter like Rust Bullet. Paints over the top of it and seals. Honestly I would really recommend sanding or taking a wire wheel to it, but your car, your preference.

Rust converter may or may not work, but it will require at least minimal sanding to knock the loose stuff off. The reason I say it may not work is because its not really meant for large areas like that and will sometimes peel off. Like any other paint/coating good prep will be the key to success. Whatever you do, do NOT hose it down with primer and leave it, that will cause more rust.

A brush on or spray on rust encapsulator will work just fine. Just knock off anything flaky and go to town. It works just fine, then you can prime and seal over it.

As posted you will need to do some prep, wire brush off loose rust and follow directions on the product. Good luck.

my 67 looked very close to that.just wire wheeled the loose stuff and used a rust converter spray.(turns it to black primer)couple years and no problems of any kind.

Looks like you got your answer, but for what it's worth, I took a big-@ss wire cup brush to mine and shot it with Chassis Saver. Friend of mine that builds cars professionally uses it instead of POR-15 and I've had great results with it, good stuff.
