It's not for sale.

When I have people ask me if my cars is for sale, I tell them it is, for twice what it's worth. When they ask what that price is, I tell them. They usually walk away without another word.

I've had 2 offers on my '69 GT350 Shelby 4sp. Once when I was loading it up to go 1200 miles returning from a SAAC convention. I'm middle class blue collar, and I'm towing this car on an open trailer with a clapped out F150. The dude drives up in a new Jaguar XKR(?) and starts throwing numbers - when we get to $75k I tell him "it's not for sale at any price because I've got too much of myself wrapped up in it".

The second time I was standing on the floor of Russo and Steele in Scottsdale watching a '70 GT350 start getting a fairly good number, at which point my buddy says "man, yours is nicer than that one and 4sp to boot" - a bidder overhears my conversation with my buddy and the next thing ya know he's giving me a full court press - even takes my ph# and follows up twice in the following year. To no avail - I aint selling.

But it does make you feel good.

I can’t imagine selling because I’d never find what I wanted for anything remotely close to what I have in it. I bought it back when they weren’t all that much$$$ (stupid cheap), did all the work myself, I’m blue collar middle income, and know if I ever parted with it, I’d never get another.

Every car show I attend there is always someone,Hey is that for sale?No it,s not...Then I have to listen to some drawn out story of their dad or uncle used to have one...Even before the body work was done ..The paint looked like crap and bondo hangin off the rear wheel wheels, hey is that for sale? No!!!Only 1 guy really knew what I had..He was a petty fan like me...He knew that the king drove a 66 belvedere to 27 wins and that sox& martin drove a satellite to a winters national championship...That guy was a true MoPar nut like me..
NO IT,S STILL NOT FOR SALE!!!EVER!!!!!!!

To me that is one of the best parts of the hobby.
Sure beats all the "Cool Nova" comments I get when I am driving one of the Dusters.
:rolling:

I get people asking on what seems like a regular basis I just tell them to shoot me a price I can't refuse lol I have yet to get one

When my dad owned a 69 RR ORG.383 HP car ...Well I came out of a 7-11 (getting a slurpee) and some punk was poking around under the hood.

This being my dads car and being a 200+pound guy I asked him what the f*** he was doing...prob just looking but w/o permission...looked like he crapped his pants (speechless), he was scared and ran away/

I like meeting car guys as much as the next person but you have to respect peoples things...

I would not want to be the person who did that to one of my cars, I am a clam person by nature but I can't stand it to have other people even touch my cars with out permission (with permission is a different story) much less open the hood....

I have to agree Danial. Although I heard the same story a few times from the same guy lol. But for the most part when they ask if it's mine they usually tell me a story about their cars back when they were a teenager.

8 or 9 years ago I drove a 1971 Cuda 440 with a shaker. One night a local cop followed me home, followed me up my gated driveway and turned on his red and blues. It was past midnight. He asked to see under the hood. I said ok if he'd turn off the light bar.
Once under there, he of course wanted the shaker taken off. You guys know....that's a pain...
after looking it over, he asked if it were for sale. I said no. He would stop me from time to time, or pull up beside me and ask and ask.....
A year or so later I ran in to the grocery store. When I came out, there was a dude standing by the car. he asked if it was for sale. When I said no, he offered 10,000 more than I had in it. He bought it without looking under the hood or hearing it run.
I kinda miss that ole car
A cop friend ran the vin for me the other day. It's now registered as a Chevelle in the same town that the guy was from. I hope he didn't wreck my 'cuda and use the vin on a chevelle project....what a shame

I wouldn't leave any vintage or classic car parked in a lot or anywhere else in public for a prolonged period or on a regular basis. Nobody questions a tow truck hooking up a car and driving away...
You got a point there. Have you ever heard or seen it pulled off?

Never happened to me, Although I get people doing the walk arounds at the grocery store and wanna ask a million questions.

My Exes dad has a 1948 Ford F68 and it happens to him all the time.. Leave it in a parking lot there's a note on it.... spends the winter in storage there's a note on it.... at his mechanics shop same deal.... I'm listing the truck for him when I get it out of storage because he has dementia issues now and his license was pulled... wish he had kept some of those notes but he never planned to sell :(

I don't mind the attention as long as they don't touch, the thing I hate most, is when someone walks up to your car and asks if it's for sale, and in the same breath starts telling you why its not worth much because of this and.....I usually let them finish and ask how many times that stupid BS has yet to yield them a sale to them, after insulting the owner, they usually just walk away with a stupid look on their face. My favorite, is after they tell me what all is wrong with it, I ask them how much it would cost to repair what they thought was wrong, then subtract that from the new/restored price and tell them I must be underselling it then.

I remember when this sort of thread started on the charger forum, (this same thread was the reason why I have yet to return to that site). I found some of the things the guys were saying, inflated prices (not really that bad), yelling at people for asking them about their cars, cursing them out, assaulting some guy It was three pages of the biggest ******** on the site talking about abusing other car guys, for asking weather or not their car was for sale. I personally don't care if somebody asks me about anything I own. I consider it to be a potential future sale, if anybody is really interested enough to give me an offer, I might very well sell if they offer enough. I have had other people treat me like **** when I have asked them about their stuff, and it felt REALLY ANNOYING :icon_rolleyes:. If somebody gives me a rude response, or an angry remark, they will not see a response from me, just a shrug and me walking away, never to give them my buisness. If somebody asks about my car, than I really like the oppertunity to talk about it and I will take their number, to use later. If somebody starts bashing my car, I will not be likely to sell to them, but I won't start an argument ether, (yes I will still take their number). The thing is, when you go to sell your car, I have found that pulling out the box of notes, and giving the right of first refusal to the guys who showed interest in it a good thing, you basically already have a group of buyers lined up for you :D

I just want to know where these proposed buyers are when I drive my 66 hemi Charger.

In 1985 I wanted to buy this Beautiful 68 318 charger from a Priest I had met, because we were in phoenix, and the heat was killing us, and the A/C worked on his charger. Yellow, with white Interior. I had another charger without A/C, and was pretty fatigued by it. So I went to the local chevy swap meet to sell a blower or something, and being in a hurry I parked in a "no parking" zone. I wasn't gone two minutes when the loudspeaker says, "whoever owns the charger, MOVE it!". I came right back, and a guy was standing there, writing a note. He said, I want to buy your Charger, and that was the only way I could get your attention! (I needed 1,200 to buy the A/C car) I said, $1,500 and it's yours. He bought it, and I went and bought the A/C car. He comes to my house an hour later with a driver to help move the old charger, and saw the shiney yellow one. and about pooped! he said: where did you get that Charger? I said, I bought it from a Catholic Priest. It was totally true, but he didn't believe me, and just laughed as he drove away. there is a God, and he saved my bacon, Literally!

The best offer I got was when I parked outside a local diner to run in and get some breakfast to go, and I came out and there was a couple with a really nice Harley parked next to me and looking at the car. They offered me $10k in cash and their bike for my Road Runner, but I told them it wasn't for sale. Turned out the bike was worth about $7k, so that would have been about $17k for a car I was less than $4k in to at the time. :)

I take my car to work, stores, whatever all the time and have gotten a few notes, requests for pictures, offers, etc. I think the best thing I got was when I took it to a car wash, and a little girl about 9 or so wondered in from the nest stall and started walking all around the car. She started asking me about the road runner and telling me how it was such a nice car (in a kid's way), and I let her get in and honk the horn. About that time Mom came over, and I thought she was pissed, but she told me she was amazed because her daughter had never shown any interest in cars before. So if in nine or ten years you see a hottie driving around Jacksonville in a Road Runner... you're welcome. :)

Leaving notes on someone's windshield? C'mon, guys, it's someone else's car. It's like having someone walk up and pat your wife on the ***. Look, but don't touch.

When my late wife and I first got married all we could afford was a little second floor apartment right on the main drag. All we had was street parking or municipal parking half a block away. I'd park my Ramcharger in the lot. I came out one morning to see local kids putting sales flyers from a local business on cars. I walked up just as one girl was about to put on the windshield of my Ramcharger.

"Please don't do that."

"Why," she asked.

"Because I didn't give you permission to touch my truck. And I didn't give your boss permission, either. So, please don't touch what's not yours."

She didn't cop an attitude and I didn't cop an attitude with her.

Her boss was someone I did business with at the time. I pointed out to him that he was wasting his time and money. Most people were snatching his flyers off the car and throwing them on the ground. His cost for printing and the money he was paying the girls to plaster the town was literally blowing down the street.

I think the worse thing to happen is some guy follows your wife home from work trying to get her to stop and talk about the car. My last episode with that was in 88 and she was pregnant. The car see was driving was a 73 318 Challenger but it was a pretty nice car. You wouldn't think is was a big deal to drive a car that was only 15 years old back then but I guess to them it was. They scared her half to death and she called me on the cell and told me what was happening and that she wasn't far from home. My driveway is 120 feet long and I told her to drive all the way into the garage and click the door down. I met the morons with a .45 on my side but they didn't see it until they were in the driveway. Needless to say they didn't say much when they stopped and saw it. I was calm and asked them if it were true that they tried to get my wife to stop on the side of the road and when they replied yes I then asked them if they were idiots and said I have their license plate number and it had better never happen again and that the car isn't for sale and never would be to them. Never saw them again either lol
