Hi Poly guys,

I am planning to upgrade my 64 POLY engine with a 4 bbl intake/cam and I want to know which parts are recommended.

Which parts should I look for?

Would you prefer the factory one which is a rare option or should I use the aftermarket Weiand intake (and which one is the best choice)?

Are there any problems known about the choke and the kickdown parts referring the usage of the aftermarket Weiand intake (Weiand stealth)?

For know I am using the stock 2 bbl intake with a remanufactured Carter cam as shown on the pic.

Thanks in advance

Poly 318 yahoo group Gary Povlovich .these people are very helpful , Gary is having a new manifold made up as we speak.

Thanks, I know about this manifold but the 2nd link was really helpful. Do you know somebody who has this intake already in use?
My biggest fear is to have the kickdown working well with that intake because it seems a bit higher than the stock one and I don`t want to swap to the aftermarket wireing ones. I know that a friend have lots of problems with this stuff on his 440 BB (his ride: 65 Dodge Coronet 500).

This mail answeres lots of questions but not all:

Terry,

Let me help explain to clear up any confusion as to the manifold project
undertaken by Chrysler Power Magazine.

The pictured HEMI intake in the magazine is the "insipiration" for the New
Poly manifold. The common features are that the New Poly manifold will
have a similar dual-plane runner layout with air gap design and generous
plenum to provide power to stock as well as modified/High Performance
277-318-326 Poly engines. However, the New Poly manifold is a totally new
casting mold that incorporates the required valley plate, water crossover
passages, temp sender/vacuum outlets, and water neck outlet. This will be a
one-piece totally "New" bolt-on Poly 4bbl. intake manifold that will far
outperform the Weiand #7503 four barrel intake with power "off-idle" to
6500rpm. It will provide increased HP & Torque on a stock Poly as well as a
"built" Poly; be it stock crank or 350-402 cubic inch STROKER Polys.

A new Poly intake has been my "backburner" intention for some years but
"life" always got in the way till Roland Osbourne from Chrysler Power
Magazine heard how great an engine the Poly is and decided to bring this
project to reality. He is the mover and shaker behind all the promotion of
this worthy endeavor and I have taken a personal interest to help provide
Poly technical information and our "needs" data as well as interfacing with
the foundry to help with Roland's project. I want to see our "Polyheads"
have a reasonably priced HP Poly intake manifold that "performs" and thus
end the high-priced E-bay nonsense of the Weiand 7503 that falls short of
our expectations and most of our needs.

I will try to visit and post on the Forward Look site but you may copy and
paste this e-mail if it will help clear some of the confusion.

Thank you,
Gary Pavlovich

Thanks for the link!

They're still putting the finishing touches on the first castings, so no one has them in use yet. Gary says the Lokar cables will work fine with them.

Ok. Usually I don`t like to be the 1st one to check it because it is a lot of money to spent and it`s already gone if it doesn`t fit. I am asking very detailed because we had the same problems with a friends 440 engine and we rebuilt the engine again with the stock parts. Every day there was another issue with the kickdown and so on. So hopefully everything will working well if the stock intake is installed again.

If you have experience with this or know someone else, please let me know. I am very interested in this stuff and will upgrade my POLY.

I am about ordering a new Diff with the options 3.23:1, true trac posi in a 741 case. This would be the first step and then I will Do the intake/cam/header stuff. I don`t want to build a race car but I`d like to have a bit more power without a engine swap because everything is matching on my car and I like the POLY engine because nobody knows anything about them in Germany.

Cheers

Bel do you have a deposit in on a Poly intake?

Not yet, GP. I might buy one, but not sure if I'll do that or put the money toward my 426.

I found an intake at a swap meet in Conroe TX. last year it's and Edelbrock p 600 3 deuce manifold 2 just sold on e bay for @ $600.00 ea. I saw one 2 wks. after I bought mine on craigslist go for$ 1400.00 this is an option

Wow....that`s a big difference. But the question is how long does it takes to get the carbs for that intake and how much bucks have you to spent for them.

It is defenetly to expensive for me but I really like the TRI POWER LOOK, that`s really ****!

Poly intakes 4 bbl kick down levers would be rare to find one.... there were a lot of changes when they went from poly push button to column and console shift La... the cable system would be the cheapest easiest way. Or make something up from scratch as long as the throttle positions move the full range and the geometry is right is all that matters... or you get odd shifts and/or kill the tranny. A 4 bbl doesn't open to close the same distance as a 2 bbl. I believe the 2 bbl has a longer stroke and this is where linkages matter most other than the obvious height and with of the different carbs and intakes..... the kick down must be adjusted properly and as long as it moves all the way to the rear at full throttle and returns to the same place at idle it was before... I would adjust the one you have by the numbers manual and get real familiar with it then do the swap....

What you have is a rare 727 with two pumps for pushstarting the car like a standard the push button doesn't effect any thing the problem is the 4 bbl and intake are taller and wider depending upon which one you're going to I would use an edelbrock 600 cfm and 340 4 bbl linkage from a '68 Mark and combine the best of both worlds so it looks stock and bolts up and works..... the buddy who drove around without the lever was killing his transmission or he had a manual valve body and the lever pinned all the way back.... you will never replace that trans if in fact it is original to the car..... some racer would love to have first gen pushbutton. Other than the cool buttons it's something rare

The people on the a body forum may be better help for parts because they deal with more small block stuff where b body is more big block.... the a body folks have to be more creative with tighter engine bay etc....

Let me check.....I will be very busy this weekend but I will stay in touch with you. Thanks! Your comments are very helpful

The nearest I can find is a company called Atlas obsolete chrysler .... there part no 824-166 for early 273 la motors and Herbs mopar restoration and performance again these are for the 67 and later la.... but it would be necessary to fab the two together to make one factory looking poly 4 bbl setup.... I would surf around for cheaper than $350 one to cut up......

You should be able to find an intake manifold on eBay and the bracketing also for an early '64 273 4 bbl because they made them the same year as you're car and adapt it from 1/2 your original one... or a 383 4 bbl auto May even be closer... in the end I don't think you'll avoid makeing one from 2 and you're 1/2 way there.... I would search for those kits ad find one that's complete but a little rusty on auction.... there's a 383 4bbl kick down linkage and a 301 poly 4bbl '55 Chrysler power pack on eBay.... but I don't know if the 55 301 and 64 318 are intergenerational or not if they fit I would gasket match the port..... something to really study on.... my 67 is a one year only motor and just has a different timing cover.... for the love of mopar.....

Hmm.....Thanks for your toil. It isn`t easy. 350 usd is really a lot for an experiment. I am unsure in this moment. I will check it when I`ll be back at home. I am on customer site the next days and i will be back on thursday.
