The RR I am looking at is going to need mufflers, it had Flowmasters, which I know sound incredible with headers... 2 and a 1/2 inch pipes.... I have a five year old boy that will occasionally occupy the back seat. Any suggestions on replacement mufflers that will still give the awesome sound of the 40 series, but won't vibrate the teeth out of his face?? lol Jason

Well, If he's only five, he's going to have to lose the teeth anyway!:toothy5:

DYNO-MAX IS A GREAT MUFFLER TOO... OTHER THAN THE DELTA SERIES 50, WITH THE PROPER SIZED TUBING & MUFFLERS {TOO BIG TUBING & NO H OR X PIPE, WILL GIVE YOU TOO MUCH MOISTURE & A RESONANCE/DRONE} FROM FLOWMASTER, IS ALL I'VE RAN FOR YEARS.... I LOVE THE SOUND MYSELF, MUSCLE CARS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE A LITTLE ABNOXIOUS ANYWAY... sorry about the all caps my caps lock button stuck

I don't know if it would work for you but Accurate Exhaust has some decent options for factory style mufflers that supposedly flow very well. I have been looking at options for my 69 RR without going to the louder flowmaster type route. I spoke with the owner recently about it and he stated his mufflers would rival most performance mufflers. I have no proof in the matter but its worth looking into.

So true bob tile..... maybe I would be doing him a favour !! lol

Jason69 RR, If you already have a good performance muffler & pipes & it's just a little too loud, maybe you should add/try a silencer in the tailpipe section, wouldn't cost much & could add them easily... kind of what like the Hemi's had, back in the day... more than one way to skin a cat

When I bought my GTX, it had Flowmasters and they drove me nuts. I put on Dynomax and am very happy with them.

Thanks Budnicks, but the mufflers are TOAST! no saving those puppies. I have found a few video's on youtube comparing the Delta 50's and the 40's..... LOVE the 40's, but might be a touch loud.... appreciate the suggestion. Cheers.

Are you running a 440? Which Dynomax muffler? Thanks!

No I have a stroked 383/479ci-6bbl 3" mandrel tubing & H-pipe with Flowmasters Delta 50 Series Race Mufflers, with full 3" tailpipes out the rear... I love the sound, had them on almost all my street/strip cars, since 1974ish & mine doesn't seem all that bad, some people complain about a drone, I don't really notice it, my engine makes allot of engine noise, roller cam & roller rockers, ported eddy heads, 6bbl, etc. blah blah blah... So it's par for the course, I don't have these cars for a daily driver or to have it sound like a stocker either, IMO why build a engine & muffle it to death, just my way of thinking... If you use too big of a pipe &/or no X or H pipe installed correctly, especially with-out headers, you'll get a drone/resonance way too much moisture in the pipes too, resulting in rotting the mufflers or pipe pre-maturely sometimes too... Depends on what size engine, what mods, how much power, you may only need a 2.250" pipe, like the stock exhaust had, in a 68-69 RR Charger etc., with Hemi Turbo Mufflers & if you have headers or a few improvements, you could step-up to a 2.50" pipe & muffler, if you have a stroker, good heads, big cam/carb etc. or making 550+hp you may want a bigger pipe like a 3" pipe & mufflers... Allot people, that don't know any better, blame the drone on the wrong thing usually... my $0.02 cents

I had a set of Dyno-Max mufflers on another car, they were ok, sounded kind of tinny, not throaty, if know what I mean...

ok all good stuff to know budnicks ....thankyou! The setup I am looking at is 440 6 pack, unknown cam, hedman headers, and I believe 2.5' pipe. When it comes time to replace, should I be thinking "X" or "H" pipe?

either is fine, not really a noticeable difference, between them to worry about, BUT the H-Pipe is easier to work around, than the X pipe if you ever need to do tranny work, depending on where the H-pipe or X-pipe is/crosses

I replaced my flowmaster 40's with summit turbo mufflers. At like $35 each, you cant beat the value and they sound great. I even cheaped out and clamped them on so when they rot off, ill just unbolt and toss em in the trash. A nice thing is theyre loudest at idle and smooth out around 2000-3000 rpm, perfect for cruising.

But like someone said up above, consider some sound deadener like Dynamat, etc. it'll really quiet down the interior while keeping the car as obnoxious as can be for the neighbors lol.

I had Hooker Super Comp headers, 3" pipes and flowmasters on my 340 Swinger. Damn they sounded good when you stood behind it but dang they were too loud when you were in it. I need something else for my GTX too.

I'm using Summit street & strip mufflers on my 65 sat. my cousin has flowmasters on his 40 ford pick up and my car sounds as good for @ a 1/3 of the money. @ $30.00 per muffler we're going to use them on other projects we are working on

Dynomax vote here. And H pipe. X pipe has a different sound, and I like the deeper tone with H pipe. Plus, as mentioned, easier to work around H pipe.

Flowmasters? Absolutely! If I was still 20 years old. But 30 years later I prefer a mellower tone, like to be able to have conversations in the car, and I really am a cop magnet even with a quiet car. Sure don't need any more cop attractant. But believe me, I surely do love the sound of flowmasters at idle and at full boogie. Nothing like em.

Thanks for the responses, I am thinking Flowmaster 50 series delta flow.....
