Hey you crazy cat's......question for you. After doing some work for an older gentleman down the road, he was nice enough to give me an air cleaner lid, because he knew I was into Mopars and had a couple. He told me about it a couple days before giving it to me, and I thought it would be something pretty neat to just hang on the wall, or possibly use someday.

Anyways, he handed me over an air cleaner lid for an air grabber roadrunner and this thing looks absolutely brand new. I asked where he got it/bought it and he said from a friend that passed away several years back. He said he believes it's a factory part because it was pulled from a old box with Mopar stamping all over it, along with some other parts that were in old Mopar labeled boxes. Of course the first thing I asked was "do you have anything else you may want to sell/part with?" He said that's all he had left and when the guy passed almost all of it was auctioned off.

So, myself it's hard to believe this would be NOS because it literally looks brand new, but I don't want to doubt the guy. He's a decent old fella that has nothing to gain or loose by making stuff up. Anyways, there is no P/N stamp of any sort. The only thing I can dig up on the internet is that the real ones have a taller lip around the edge, which this one has about 1/4" lip. So yeah, I'm clueless. Any purist or NOS lid owner out there have any ideas? One thing's for certain, if it is real it probably belongs on a factory orientated restored or untouched car where it rightfully belongs, not hanging on a garage wall. As far as the reproduction ones go, I see a guy can pick them up for around $80-90 bucks and then another $20-30 for the stickers. If that's the case, I don't mind decorating the garage wall with it, or possibly adding it to a car down the road. Any ideas out there?

Take it for what it is and Hang it up ! I would as money is just paper that has no respect ! The deal and respect you have for each other is worth more than that !!

I hear ya. I really do appreciate and respect the old man's gesture. Last thing I'd put on it is worrying about making a dime. If it is NOS,(I may be half tilted here), but I think it probably deserves to be on an air grabber roadrunner where it belongs, not just cool garage art. If it was beat up, dented and run through the ringer, I'd have no problem with it on the wall and probably be just as happy with it...but like mentioned, it looks brand new. I have other NOS garage art, but it doesn't hold a wick to this thing as far as condition. Thanks Wedge!

I have an original lid that came with my 68 RR that I bought in 1982. No it wasn't on the 68 but in the extra parts collection I got with it. All I can do is look at it and compare to a repo, but if I recall that repo is darn good - almost indistinguishable from the original.

What an awesome piece of wall art you got there Propwash . . . hang it on the wall, and enjoy the heck out of it ! ! ! You deserve it ! ! ! ( smile )

Prop,

From your photo, it looks to me that you have an NOS lid there. The way to tell is by the definition of the bends from the metal stamping. The NOS is very crisp and well defined with an almost 90 degree bend downward on the outer lip/edge. Repro is more fluid, smoother, and less definition in the bends/transitions of the metal. I just went to the garage and took a couple photos of mine to show the differences between repro and NOS. Hope you can see from these photos.

BTW, repro is on the left and NOS is right side.

Thanks a bunch Mopar & Missles! I knew someone here had the knowledge/experience to answer my question. Again, thanks for taking the time to do that. Looks like I can hold off on the carbon dating Photon..lol

So....gotta say, that's pretty neat! I don't want to draw out this simple thread, but let me ask this.....If it was you guys, would you hang on to it, because of the guys kind gesture, and not to mention it's pretty awesome garage art. Or, would you sell it to someone that's looking to top off that concours resto or survivor car, where it belongs? Heck I have no clue what something like that may be worth.. Anyways, thanks again! FBBO pulls through like always.

I would put his name and date on the back side and hang it up. For what money you would get for it you would never replaxe it ! I have an OLD tach a Older gent who lived across from me gave me some time back. He use to race BigBlock fords in the day and would always come over on the weekends after we had race the local dirt track that saturday nite and see how we did and so on. He bult it from a kit as thay use to sell them back then. He has past and I real miss talking with him !
I will Never sell it as he made it and I am very proud He thought enough of me to give it to me !!
These things Can't be over ritten with Money !
It's your call but this is just my 2Cents .

Do repops come in original looking Mopar boxes? Nice piece there and I think I would hang it up. Over the years I've let many pieces go and now regret it for one reason or another....including complete cars.

How about paying it forward and trade someone with the correct car a repoped one for this one (you have garage art and they will have a correct piece). Keep the giving going. You will still have something to remember the gentleman by and you will be doing a good deed for someone else.

Karma can be a good thing.

That's pretty cool Will. I would hang on to it myself and when you find the right car for it to go on, it will mean that much more when you set the air cleaner/lid on top the motor and you'll remember the guy that gave it to you. I plan on putting one of those on my car when I find one. My buddy has the 4bbl base plate that i'm going to try and get from him.

For some reason Karma must have gone to my EXwife in the deal ???? I don't seam to get it ! But you do what makes you feel good ! Thats the KEY !!

Good idea's Fella's. Thank you. I will hang on to it. Either way you look at it, the sentimental part of it is worth more than what ever it would bring. Myself, I'd like to see it on a bird needing it to be back whole again. Selling it, I would feel pretty guilty taking cash for it, because the old guy just didn't hand me a few bucks.....He actually thought about what he wanted to give me from a personal standpoint. And like a few of you mentioned, never know...maybe someday I would have that bird needing that lid, and It would be pretty neat if it that part ended up on it. Trading over sounds like a good idea. Either way, I'll make sure it finds a nice place on the wall, nestled up next to my roadrunner.

Keep it. Maybe when you get bored you can build a car around it.

If I were you I would go find a frame and put it behind a peice of glass. That way its original luster is retained and value will only go up in time. How many people can say they have a mint condition air grabber NOS lid hanging in there garage that was given to them by an old gentleman who got it from the estate of a diseased mopar guru? (damn that's a mouthful)

Either way that's way cool garage art and one hell of a conversation starter.
