I have a 71 Satellite with a 318. I really want to convert to dual exhaust. 2.25 inch or 2.5 inch? I'm also checking with local custom shops and I'm being quoted $900 +. That doesn't include headers either. I was wondering, If I were to order a 340 dual exhaust set up on the net, would it hook up to my stock exhaust manifolds? I'm looking for a cheaper route. I have a great mechanic friend with a hoist, so If need be, I can use it to install, but with my health issues, I'd prefer to have someone else do it. Any other suggestions? I'm looking at building a 392 stroker with another 318 I'm sourcing and I'm liking the idea of headers in the future., sooner if I can get everything for a more "reasonable" price. Read that as cheaper LoL

Thank you for your assistance!

If you want to do it cheaper and only once, then maybe install headers with a dual exhaust. This will hook up to your small block now and whenever you put the stroker in (which will like it even better).

Unless you are from the land of the rich, I would check out some other muffler shops. I can get duals from the exhaust manifolds out the back ( less the mufflers) for less than $300. I have a 64 Dodge................................MO

I did what Cornpatch suggested on my 67 some years ago. Locally I found a fellow at a muffler shop that did the pipes from scratch. With the Dynomax mufflers I believe it was around $350. He used a base out of the computer but basically did the entire thing from scratch. I went 2 1/4 only because I thought 2 1/2 looked too big.
On the other note if you do want to order, Accurate Exhaust can set you up. Just look at their website, order the duals and it will ask you the number on your manifolds so you can get the correct pipes.

Hey Steve - we don't need no stinkin' mufflers anyway!:3gears:

on a 318 anything more than a 2" is a waste, there just isn't enough volume.

Dave, you should hear that brute from inside the car with nothing on the floors, about 8" of exhaust pipe on the manifolds and no boots on the shifter. Loud a plenty at 40 MPH let alone a good hard acceleration!! Stay tuned on the 62-65 site, or here, after next Thursday. A big PITA should be resolved by then.................................MO

What are the thoughts on 2 1/2" exhaust pipes thru Flowmasters and then stepping down to 2 or 2 1/4" tailpipes.? 440 with about 375 Horses..........................MO

Ok, So I'm looking at some headers first. Which type ?shorty headers, long tube headers, block huggers? What about Brand? BBK, Borla, Doug's, Dynomax, Flowmaster, Hedman, Hooker, JBA, Kooks, Pace Setter, Patriot etc? I'm trying to keep costs down as I don't have much spare income, but I don't want to get crap either. I've heard Hedman are good. I haven't really wrenched on a car since shortly after highschool, so I'm flying by the seat of my pants. All assistance is appreciated.

get full length, heddmans are good i have had several i like the tti headers on a bodies though. i would just go ahead and get the 2.5 it will be there once you do the engine upgrade so you don't have to do it twice i have installed the summit kits before they work fine.

I've seen Header back kits for specific lines. What is involved in mating them to "other" headers? Is this something I can realistically do my self?

will there be any problems with a 2.5 on the stock engine?

X2 I would suggest geting the exaust hangers that bolt to the floor pan for both sides and have a shop do the installation.... they make money on the parts more than the labor..... 2 1/2" worked fine on all my 318's with headers...

A .508, with what else? the stock heads, or X heads? The 318 is a good engine, but there is no replacement for cubic Inches. That cam may lift higher, but there isn't the volume of a 340 or 360. You can dump all kinds of gas in, but the piston is only so big. When I ran my 318 years ago that way, I lost most of my bottom end, and the large exhaust contributed to it. 340's chewed me up like bubble gum. a good 340 uses up a 2 1/2 fine. That was my only point. I'm not trying to dog any ones car here, Now stroke a 360, that is some volume.

Stock heads with valve springs with dampners. Hooker headers and 4 speed and 4:56 gears.

For my 71 roadrunner I bought headman headers 78030 beacause they clear my fast ratio pitman and idler. They were $150 shipped. And I bought tti 2.5" X pipe exhaust from Chicago connection exhaust for about $600 shipped my engine is a 400 stroker

I worked a a muffler shop and you don't want there pipe.... just labor and shop around It sucks not being physically able to work on you're car... I do a day and 3 days to recover from it... things that took minutes now are days... I got a headers and dual kit for my car 2 1/2" from jegs and added the floor pan hangers. Cut the flange on the headers that linked them together so there separate get some extra clamps and hangars bolts that are at least grade 5 gasket set so they have more than enough stuff and it all goes on the car while it's up on their lift ask to spray bomb all the bare metal maybe a fuel line or brake hose and pair of shoes if it needs it. It's a rare day when I get to walk under my car

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you Steve!

Considering I`m getting a 318 with a Transmission for next to nothing $$ wise, I`m thinking the stroker kit will be worth it.
