I haven't had any upholstery work done in a while. Took my seats over for an estimate. Wow! $700 seems like a lot of cash. Anybody else price any lately?

I tore my seats down myself then painted them and took them to a guy that does upholstery at the local university, I seen his work before so I knew he did good work. $300! I supplied the seat covers and foam

Compare what it would cost to purchase what the upholsterer says they are replacing (Foam pads if need be, the covers themselves, hog rings, hog ring pliers if you want, etc.) to the $700 quote. The difference is what you would save in labor if you do it yourself. It's really not hard...especially if you follow directions and lay the material in the sun prior to install.

The guy I got the quote from is a friend and is really good. It's just that $700 got my attention. If that's the going rate, so be it. I just had sticker shock.

Was that price for him making the covers himself, then installing? Because I just paid a little more than $750 just for the front & rear covers themselves. That doesn't include new foam either. They are Ledgendary brand.

I had my seats done in leather and he told me one hide is $600.00 and I had around that much in my fronts (just fronts). If I were doing my seats original I would buy the covers and do it myself without a doubt "it's not that hard to hog ring some covers down".

Parts & labor $700. New foam on 1 seat.

Sounds like a fair price to me.

I just got a quote from a guy who wanted a $1,000 to make custom covers for just the front seats. They would be black with three stripes running down the center. A bit too rich for my taste.

What I'm doing now is applying my Pittsbird principles to the task. :) I got a set of like new but used 71/72 Legendary covers, seat foam, and seat backs from a guy who didn't need them for his GTX project for $300. I'm going to put them on a pair of 76 F body seats from a Dodge Aspen that I got for $45. One of the biggest gripes F body guys have is there's no seat covers or foam being repopped for their cars and they have to spend $$$$$ to get stuff custom made. The seat covers on my seats now are in great shape, with one small seam split on the driver's side and the foam is in great shape, so I'm going to have the seat cover repaired and sell them on ebay, along with the foam.

Legendary Interiors makes a whole bunch of videos that are on YouTube that show you how to dismantle and reassemble the seats, and it's a pretty easy process. And I ordered a pair of hog nose pliers and 150 clips for $15 from Late Model Restorations, so I shouldn't have any problem doing the work myself.

I'm thinking I'll get between $300 and $400 for the original covers, foam, and backs, which means I'll be having two like-new seats, albeit with 71/72 covers instead of 74 covers (which look like crap IMHO), and I'll make $35 for my troubles. :)

That's actually a good price for just a front set is he doing rear too as stated above you can buy just the covers front and rear for around 600-700 foam is I think 150 a seat and then labor, it's very easy to do your self if your just order the stuff , I think you can get pui stuff from year one for cheap and you can use a coupon too I just bought front and rear upholstery for my charger for 400 with a 30% off code I'll put it on myself so if you can do that it would be cheaper what is your friend useing or is he makeing it himself , you also should take in to consideration that if he screws up and something looks funny your stuck with it pui you can cause problems and most of the time they will send you out another set if there's a problem with the first set ,free of charge ,let us know what you do an post pics any ?on how to install upholstery just ask

As I said, he's real good. He's not a publicity hog, but I know he has done a couple of cars for Billy Gibbons. Specifically the blue 35 or 36 coupe used on one of the videos.
