AM Radio Resto?

If you know any Ham(Armature) radio operators in your local area some of the experienced ones are pretty damn good with fixing radios, even your standard AM/FM types. Its what I did with mine when the FM stopped working had a guy fix it, cost only a couple of bucks for parts to fix, and they guy didn't want any money for his time. Some of these guys just like the challenge or experience fixing stuff. Otherwise, it can be expensive to send in to some of these shops the restore them.
 
I'm sending my 65 satellite radio to Vintage radio for a conversion from am only to am/fm mp3 player using the org case and face plate for @$350.00 the have a web site
 
Had a conversion done on my 65 Coronet by S/M Electro-Tech Inc. out of Blaine Minnesota and it turned out great. I believe all the parts are about the same from the different installers and now you can have Bluetooth added also which is great. I believe most installers can also repair about anything. I do know some HAMs around here. That's a good idea.

Thanks for the pointers. I did contact Wards, $165, which I guess is OK, but 8 weeks.

I like the idea of using modern functionality. My plan was to just make the AM radio work for the novelty really and use a bluetooth receiver connected to an amp (all hidden) and just use phone, mp3, etc as the controller. Might rethink that...

I sent mine to S/M Electro-Tech as well. Top notch and they were great to work with. For the cost bluetooth is a waste of money in my opinion. (this option adds $250 to the basic conversion cost. It requires the installation on a lighted push button switch and microphone in the car.) You can do the same with the phone connected via the Aux in and the mic on the phone. If you have a center console you can do what i did and run the Aux In cable into the center console.

The whole thing wasn't cheap. But it's amazing. Especially seeing people's faces when i turn on the stock looking AM radio in the dash and the following sound of thunder from the set up.

I sent the AM from my 67 GTX to Wards for repair. He charged me a pretty fair amount and returned it stating it had all been repaired with the exception of the push button assembly which had a stripped cam. He said parts were unavailable to repair that. If he had told me it could not be repaired completely, I would not have had him repair it at all. I bought a nicer working radio from Tony's Mopar Salvage for $125 and wrote off the money to Wards as school of hard knocks. The one I got from Tony is now being converted to an updated AM/FM with decent power to drive some decent speakers.

Don't waste money money on a repair of your factory unit if the push buttons do not work. If all you want is a working AM radio and don't card about the push buttons, PM me and I will sell you the one I had refurbished by Wards.
 
kellycom, thanks for the added info on the Bluetooth option as I was considering sending my radio back and adding it. After reading your post I will save my time and money.
