I tried searching around and the info is overwhelming and contradictory to say the least.

I'm looking at some 17x9 rims. I would like to run at least a 275 maybe a 285 with a 60 or 65 sidewall. Radials since this will be a mostly street car i.e. 90% street. (let me know if these sizes are off base)

I plan on doing the full US Car Tool B body stiffening and probably the CalTracs on my 67 hardtop.

Realistically how much horsepower/torque could I put to the rear wheels without having major wheel spin. I would plan on deflating a bit if/when I go to the track.

Thanks. Just don't want to order wheels and find out the hard way.

6 foot side wall. That a tall freaking tire. Hehehe. I know what you mean. A 285/60r17 sounds like a truck or suv tire size. You need to go to something like a 315/40r17

Lol. Fixed it. A 315 would have a lot of meat sticking out wouldn't it?

No I haven't ordered them yet. I don't want to get a 9" rim and find out after that I can only have a 450hp motor or they will just spin. That 295 look just right though.

Depends on the tire, a sticky one with the cal tracs might surprise you. How much power are you trying to make?

Orginally was aiming for 500 with the 340. But now y'all are really making me consider either a 400 or 440 stroked out to a 512. So about 650ish.

Traction depends on a lot more than tire width. Your suspension, driver, and how hard you hit the tire with power all plays a role.

Good point. Good upgrades on the suspension without spending a fortune. Good driver and a not stomping on it.
