5.7 or 6.? in a 73 charger

Regardless of which engine I decide on I will try and stay with the original auto 727 or Dodge transmissions, and have the computer flashed for a manual transmission.
 
Keep an eye out on E-Bay for 6.1L Hemi. I scored a 50K mile 2008 Magnum SRT8 6.1L Hemi with NAG1 transmission, all engine accessories, exhaust, wiring, and computer for $4,000. The auction showed a buy me price (I think $6,000) with a make an offer, so I offered $4,000 and it was accepted. I missed out on a really low mileage 6.1L with 6-speed a year ago. I think it sold for under $6,000. I like the idea of the five speed automatic, but it makes the swap alot harder, mostly because of all the electronics the transmission needs (including a stock type shifter.)

The 6.1 is a better performance engine than the 5.7, but there are alot more 5.7 engines for sale fairly cheap. I don't know much about the MDS (good or bad) when used for this type of swap.
 
I got over 25 MPG in my 6.3 challenger with an automatic. There are lots of 5.7's out there. Its all about gearing, weight, and aerodynamics.
 
What is the benefit of the NAG1? Don't you have to modify the tunnel? Instead of the new transmission I was going to find a stock one and build it to handle the horsepower.

It is just the 5-speed overdrive automatic that came with the engine. No real benefit over other overdrive transmissions, it was just the stock one from the SRT.
 
The nag1 can handle some serious power!!
 
We have Nag1's holding 1400 rwhp in 4400# cars. They hold up pretty well when they are built right
 
For the money your spending on a new Gen III why not look into a Hemi. A Real Gen II will cost 14,500.00 then you have something to o look at plus the shear torque of this motor will run circles around the Gen II which is not even close to a Hemi.
 
Back on to the original topic of 5.7 or 6.?, I am thinking I am going to replace the front-end with aftermarket coil over shocks, and have the 5.7 / 6.1 mounts put on. I will keep my eyes open for a good price on either engine. Using a good transmission shop I will build the trans and match it with a 3.55 rear.

As soon as I get started I will start a new thread with pictures of the process along the way.

No disrespect to the Elephant engine here but why? Why spend $14k on an engine? You can get a junkyard 5.7 block for $500-1000 needing a rebuild, stroke it, fuel inject it and make 450-650 hp on less $$ and have less weight up front. In all honesty the majesty of the beast is in its looks and no longer in its HP numbers.
 
The Nag1 behind a 5.7 or6.whaterver will require a stand alone tcm and ecm dont thibk it is as easy as a straight swap over and NO , you cannot just reflash the stock ecm.
Do some reading in the other threads in this forum and save yourself a LOT of time MONEY and frustration!
 
I can tell you for a fact that I can built a gen 3 426 for far less money than a old school hemi, it will make more power and be more reliable. Now if you built a 528 or some monster stroke motor you might make more...for WAY more money and with FAR less reliability. You can make 700+ out of a gen3 426 and drive it anywhere.
