I'm curious why people block the VIN before posting a picture.
I've read thieves can have a key duplicated by using the VIN on the newer vehicles.
Are there any real concerns for posting this info on vehicles that are 30 + years old?

thanks, Joe

same thing with their plates. they are scared someone will dig up their address and come steal their cars. im sure it also has something to do with people taking the number and applying it to another stolen car to get it plated. too many people out their doing bad things especially with the interweb. thats my theory any way

or the..."hide my license plate" pictures paranoia, don't care what stories you've heard, or supposedly witnessed so called first hand, I'm sure someone will chime in on how it's a real threat and blah blah blah, or to each his own...barf barf barf. Someone will say if you had a car worth stealing...vomit vomit vomit, I guess it makes some people sleep better at night.
Fear of the unknown is strong in some people...
my favorite movie quote;
“Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. Do not misunderstand me, danger is very real, but fear is a choice. We are all telling ourselves a story and that day mine changed.”

I supposed that unscrupulous people could look up your VIN number, find out where you live and pay a visit to your home while you were away.

& some untrustworthy people don't need any more information than they can easily get or have already...

Wow, I maybe doing a bad thing when I'm at a car show and photographing very nice cars?
I have always when photographing said cars have taken a photo of the numbers on that car to keep with the photos. (placards in the windows show the owners name etc.)
Is this bad car show etiquette? Not joking here! I don't want to be attacked by the owner. It's really not very hard to find info. on somebody now a days.

If it is on display, it is open for documentation. Leave it in the garage under a cover if you don't want anyone to see your "numbers. This can be a problem in the workplace where employees want to use an alias. I won't live in fear of someone knowing my name or plate number.

I hear ya, I'm sure it's just over cautious, but we also hand our drivers license to any bouncer or liquor store cashier without hesitation but wouldn't want that info online. Heck, 99% of us don't even share our identity or even home town here on the forum. Less is more.

Yeah, not sure why people are paranoid about that? I did see a guy out in the parking lot at work taking pics of my VIN and it did raise an eyebrow but only because "why would someone do that"? Oh well the choke was on him because my car has a state issued VIN tag reading 2013DODGE blah blah so it's always funny to me when someone reads mine. To each his own but I don't care.

I looked up my vin and all that comes up is the ad where the p.o. Was selling it. So if all those "bad" folks want to steal it, they're goin to his house! :rolling:

I can track down someone's address from their plates. Did it once when some punk was throwing gravel in front of my house. Followed him inconspicuously till I could write down his plate # then looked it up online. Got the address and drove past. Sure as **** that's where the car was.Don't know if you can find that info in all states, but I did it in Texas.

My E-BODS been in a few calendars w plates showing..... really no different than the cruze nite of the car show. If somebody really wants it, they're gonna get it. At the last Dodge City show, I saw a ton of people taking pics of NIKKI, a few even posing next to her. He11, who knows where some of those pics ended up.....

Now I realize my GTX (avatar) has no plate. But its here at the yard.... move 20 cars and you'll get her out. :headbang:
