what would you say about using automatic trans fluid in a A833 or use the regular gear oil i have heard some are using the auto stuff just wondering...
 
What 4spds did they use in 1978?

I was prepping cars and trucks at a dodge dealer and they actually changed to atf that year! Seems a little thin to me...
 
my brother-in law had a 72 'Cuda with the A833...he kept complaining that the shifter handle was getting hot....so we put it up on the hoist and checked the fluid level....it had ATF in there...we drained it out and filled with 90w....all was good after that

just a side note....the A833's in both my 66 Chargers calls for straight 140w....which is what I run in them....

personally, I would not run ATF in the manual trans..I don't care what the book calls for
 
The thing is, the gears are cut special to take advantage of the type of oil used. Early trans should take the recommended gear lube as it clings to the gears. later model stuff is designed to use the light duty ATF type lube but it is designed to use it. I DEFINITELY would NOT vary from the stock (factory) recommended fluids.
 
ATF is recommended in the 833 per the FSM BUT in very cold temps only. Run 90W and you will be fine.
 
in the '60's atf was used by the super stock racers. not sure i'd use it for a long term/high mileage car.
 
My 74 Dodge pickup came with ATF in it (by the book) and after killing a rear bearing in the 3 speed, I went to 90wt. The difference was felt right away and in winter especially but never had anymore issues after that. The truck was just a D100 light duty pos and well, what can I say.
 
I hear allot of people are using ATF in the old ones, never knew why.
I only use 140 GL-4 and have never had any problems, stick with what the manual says to use.
 
My 87 D150 318 4speed, I bought new had ATF. No other fluid was recommended. Never had a problem, neither did my buddy or his son who bought it and drove it until 2005.
