Vin sequence number

Thanks RT, I supposed as much.
Trying to find owner info in California is next to impossible unless someone has and idea how to trace better than I.

Here's a real rough example of how the VON is assigned for non-special order (i.e special paint), package (A12s, Daytonas, Superbirds, etc ) or other specialty VON (Police, taxi, dealer demo, etc) cars for 1968 and later.

January 5th- Sales manager forwards all order sheets to the regional office. Sheets are sent to Headquarters and routed to plant. These two order sheets wind up at the Hamtramck plant. Orders are sorted internally and scheduled for production. At this point, the only unique identifier to each car for billing and scheduling the car is the VON. The VIN has not been assigned yet.

One would expect to find consecutive VONs from the same dealership because the order pads would be numbered sequentially. As pads were disseminated from a regional office in somewhat of a large series, one should also expect to find similar VONs from a certain region.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi 69Coronetrt,
Thanks for taking the time to explain this. When you refer to the VON does that refer to the same thing that's labeled "Shipping Order" number on my IBM card? My cars are 1966 models that were both special ordered by the Dodge Regional Office in White Plain, NY. , and the SO numbers are only 3 apart. Did the Regional Offices have the same type of order pads as the regular dealer?
Regards,

Yes.

Sales Order (SO) is used on the broadcast sheet in 68 and earlier.
Vehicle Order Number (VON) is typically the term used after 68.

They are, essentially, the same. The both contain the scheduled Production date (SPD) and order number.

I don't know for a fact what the regional offices used but I presume it would be something similar to an order sheet at the dealer.

If you are talking about true special order cars (special paint, trim edit waivers, fleet cars, promo cars, package cars, etc) that required a specialty SO number, then you are on a totally different topic. The example I used was for the typical buyer/dealer transaction.

A typical SO for a 66 Coronet will start with an 08 or 09.
A typical SO for a 66 Charger will be 09.

What does yours start with?

Hi, it starts with 70409XXX.
Thanks,

Hi, it starts with 70409XXX.
Thanks,

704 would be the scheduled production date

09XXX would be typical for a '66 Charger. There's nothing in that particular SO that indicates anything particularly 'special'. How much history do you know about the car and for what purpose was it ordered?
