Quebec bans lowrider cars

I'm torn on the subject. I LOVE customization. I think it's great we have the options we do.

On the other hand, push bars/grills are really popular around here. If I ever get injured because some ahole consciously decides to fully eliminate the crumple zones that OEMs spend big $ designing for the safety of people, all hell's breaking loose.

Some of this crap is unreasonable. Much like the testicles. Completely indecent, but I see them everywhere.

If it affects the vehicle dynamics, as in stability and handling...heck yeah take it off the road. Vehicles are built to meet performance and safety standards that have been set forth by years of research & development, as well as and past experience. Modifying them to the point of drastically reducing and/or modifying those standards is just endangering the driver & passengers, as well everyone else around them. Funny, most of us muscle car guys strive to make our old cars handle, brake, and perform better. Those folks trash the ride and any kind of performance for the look. Clowns!

I think I should turn the keys to my Super Bee over to the government then. I have "drastically" changed the power of my engine(335 hp stock, 592 hp now), have skinny tires in front, fat ones in back (and the rears are drag radials, which are "legal"). Legal sure doesn't mean they help the handling much. In fact, with the Caltrac springs going in the back, and 90/10 shocks in the front, cornering is not going to be one of it's strong points, to put it nicely. And the Caltrac bars will also affect handling in a negative, un-engineered way. Oh, and the sway bars I removed probably would mess with their calculations too.

Then there is the "drastically" changed exhaust system, with headers and 3" exhaust. I doubt the engineers in the 60's counted on that. And my aluminum wheels way a heck of a lot less than the originals did. So now I am messing with unsprung weight. All of this is just because it is what I like. It may not be anything near what you like. But that is another thing cool about the car hobby.

How much do you figure the differences between a stock 32 Ford and a typical post WW2 hot rodded 32 were/are?

Not trying to attack you in any way. I am trying to say hot rodding has always been all about slightly, or drastically, modifying your car to fit who you are, and what you want. This guys may be clowns, and I most definitely do not enjoy what they enjoy as far as their cars. But at least they are doing something with cars. I just don't think I am anyone to judge what they are doing.

Unsafe? Probably. But my buddies full tube chassis '52 Willys sedan with a 1500 hp blown big block. 4000 rpm stall speed converter, 4.88 gears with a spool, and zoomie headers is frowned upon by the boys in blue on a fairly consistent basis. And suspension? LOL, not so much. But we are into cars. So it is good. Just my opinion.

I would just say to tread lightly and if you have an adjustable proportioning valve, have it set to mostly rear. Had someone pull out in front of me in my Mustang once when I used to run skinnies on the street w/ a stock braking system... locked the fronts, slid and hung on for dear life. Luckily they got out of the way. It def could've been argued that had my car been set up correctly, I could've stopped within a reasonable distance.

Just know if something bad happens, you could very likely be held accountable.

I don't take no offense in your post, and I see the point you're making. I run a '69 Roadrunner with more HP than your Bee, and the big difference between that and what these slammed cars are, I can directly control the results and outcome of manipulating that power. Some of the dropped cars around here are so out of wack with their camber/toe/alignment, you see them hit a bump or crack in the road, it sends the car sailing a foot or two in one direction or another, uncontrollably. Along with that issue is braking. Again, with the suspension bound and/or suppressed, flip a coin which direction the car may veer when cramming on the brakes, or even under normal braking conditions. Throw some adverse weather or road conditions in the mix, now the issues are multiplied...all uncontrollable. I really doubt aluminum wheels and headers are going to make your car handle or brake in any unwarranted manner. Cal-Tracs (I have them as well), have honestly improved my cars handling and traction performance. Removing your sway bar, I'd say you'd have to be nuts. I've had cars with and without them. Not a fan of the car leaning like the USS Missouri.

I have no issue with the traditions of hot rodding and the ingenuities that come with it. But that tradition is based on taking what the factory created and improving on it. What I see from these cars is not improving on anything, at all. They're going in the opposite direction, all in the name of appearance. That's a big difference. If that same instance foots the bill on any other kind of ride, I'd say the same thing as well. Myself, I think about my wife, family, friends and I sure as heck would never want to see anything happen to them over some clown that decided to create some monstrosity all in the name of backyard engineering, just to stand apart. That's my 2 cents on it. And for the love of god, keep your Superbee's keys in your pocket. Pretty sure the government has enough hands in your cookie jar.

Who is this "government" person?...

elite families who run all the 'fake' fiat money system and hide behind 'government'

its a new world order.... they want us all as their little slaves, period.

And for the love of god, keep your Superbee's keys in your pocket. Pretty sure the government has enough hands in your cookie jar.

Yep, the keys are in pocket. And you are right, there are way too many hands involved in just about everything it seems. I'm glad you take no offense with my comments, as they were just my opinion. And as I said, I do not enjoy/understand why kids are doing what they are doing with cars now. In fact, I leave when they show up. I take a different street if they are on the one I wanted. Not all kids, but sure seems to be a lot of them…

Probably because it has been many decades since I was one.

But I do recall being yelled at, cut off, swerved at, pulled over by cops for going too slow(35 in a 40) cruising West Colfax in Lakewood, CO, pulled over for illegal exhaust, pulled over for impaired vision(tunnel ram with Moroso velocity stacks (gold of course), pulled over for tinted windows, given trespassing tickets for being parked in a gas station(yes, putting gas in the car at the time), and on, and on….and I think the best one was the McDonald's drive thru lady telling me her husband was a mechanic and could fix the way my 340 Duster idled (.508/292 cam in 1982). I was deeply offended, as I had spent a LOT of money to make it idle the way it did. But a LOT of money is relative isn't it? Made $5.18 an hour, and spent almost all of it on my car every other Friday. And times seemed a lot more fun…

So again, I am not going to judge what they do. In fact, I think the stupid non-reality shows with "illegal" street idiots racing in the middle of the night are way more dangerous, hiding from cops….with 10 light towers lighting up their "drag strip." And cameramen, make-up artists, lighting guys, sound guys, generators, and who knows what all else walking around. I street raced for many years. As in a lot of years. I don't remember Dog Pound rd, or Quail rd in Longmont, CO having any lighting, no cops blocking the road off so we could race safely, and definitely no make-up people involved. Just cash. And stupidity.

Isn't that part of being young?

I can't imagine the G35 pictured doesn't have airbags and comes to a reasonable height/camber when driving. The only time it annoys me is when minitrucks 'lay frame' while going 60+ mph. Tears up road and does seem as if it has the potential to be dangerous.

As far as ill-handling, I had something like this pass me the other day...

I'm much more scared of something like this than a 3k lbs lowered import.

X2

I'm not sure how this became accepted for on road/highway use. Off road, why not? Rolling down the highway at 80...not good. Even if it's properly engineered (not a backyard nightmare with bird **** welds) what ever one of these slams into..ouch. Not to mention that the truck itself is way past it's rollover limits etc, with the added height and rotating mass:edgy:

With all the regulations on semi tractors... Dot should be all over it... but it's usually some sheriff's deputy who owns the trucks... the civic is harmless but there cops are annoyed with it so it has to go... I don't like a double standard.

That is one of the many things I love about my state.....true freedom

yes, freedom is a beautiful thing, but it comes with an awesome responsibility. Being free does not absolve you from your actions should something go wrong. Just because you can do something doesnt mean you should.

As long as no one else is hurt or compromised I am great with it. Imagine all the great ideas that came from people that were different not happening because people thought they shouldn't. We would all be buying saddle soap and shoveling horse ****.

Just one more low thing I don't understand.

Low-rider's aren't my style, but as long as theres been young men and cars the authorities have been after us. Here on Vancouver Island you can get your car impounded for "chirpping" your tires. Not sure where in Quebec you could drive a lowrider for fear of bashing the piss out of your car even in Montreal the roads are so bad. Glad my family fled that province in '69.
Cheers

That's great in theory, but, in practice it falls somewhat short. At the moment you take something modified onto the road, you compromise someone's safety. We can sit and argue this back and forth, but the lawmakers don't necessarilly have that option. They have to look at the general safety of everyone.

I'd like to put forward this example; Where I live there is a 100km/h speed limit. Now, I have just bought a new Hellcat. I've been to driving schools and am a very qualified driver. So, I decide one night to go out at 3am and see what the car can do. I know what my local stretch of hiway will be like, and I also made sure that the car is 100% safe. Here we go!!! I'm doing 250km/h all is good, but now I see flashing lights behind me. Pull over.... "Hello officer! It's OK, I know how fast I was going, but it's good , because I made sure the car was safe & capable, and I have attended performance driving school and I race". Here's my proof(hand officer certificates etc). I'm sure the officer will let me off!!!! NOT.

You would think there has to be something more useful the government and cops could be doing?

There is. Now if only people would do the right thing all the time, the cops & government could spend their time doing more useful things, as you put it.

Here's another article.

I've seen more than a few "hella flush" imports broke down on the side of the road in the past few months. All of them with the body sitting flat on the pavement. Not hard to figure out whatever they did to get their hella flush stance is now broken. I've also seen a few driving around with the fenders/quarters crumpled from the last time they broke down. Always gives me a chuckle. I wonder how much extra the tow truck charged to get their car on the flat bed and how much extra damage was caused dragging that hella flush POS up the ramp.
