I have read tons of these post, replies, builds, love all of them...a lot of knowledge here. I just wanted to start my own thread with a few questions specific to my car. I just bought the hemi last night....so im eager to start gathering parts.
see pic for how it looks as purchased.....
Not sure if I start a build thread in here or under projects restoration section....mods please move if need be. this will be a build thread with lots of pics, along with lots of questions. I have already spoken on the phone with a couple of you and have been a big help so far.

here is details:
67 coronet 500 with factory 273 4bbl, with 904 trans.
dirty under hood...not as pretty as rest of car. so this will be taken care of before hemi go's in...
I intend to use my 904 trans(yes it will be rebuilt with good stuff)

engine: 04 Durango engine, stock, 43k miles, modman indy intake, fresh valve job on stock heads.
im thinking from what I have read motor should already be around 360-370 hp? with good carb.

here are a few questions to start with for you experienced guys... :)
1. what powersteering pump is best to use? someone at nats told me he used a chevy citation pump with a different pulley?? my car has power steering and I will be keeping that....
2. what cam swap would you recommend? I want it to be a little lopey, sound good, run good...is there a cam I can put in and not have to change springs or lifters? or is that a bad idea?? hate to take heads off at this point...motor was running perfect when I bought it. my car will weigh 3500ish, 904 trans with a mild converter...2500-2800, headers, dual exhaust with xpipe. probably a 355 gear at most, and I will be running AC.
3. I seen hooker has a set of headers for a 5.7 hemi in a coronet...anyone tried these? or any issues with power steering cars?

so overall build and project I want is a 425hp motor...with AC, sounds good, runs good, pump gas, and I can drive anywhere....with my family.... very streetable always top priority...power second.

If I were you I'd call Comp cams and have them reccomend a cam for you.
 
Glad to see you pulled the plug! If you can Don grab the part number from that belt you have on there. i'd like to order one of those as a spare since I run the same accessories...but I added an idler to mine that you don't have.

That engine looks very good Don. Just a note on your question about valve springs. I head read/heard of some issues with snapping valve springs on the 03 engines (don't think its an issue on 04+). This was with a stock cam. So I would say you would want to step up to a better spring with a higher lift cam then a stocker.

Something to note is you can change the Cam in this engine without removing the heads. If you've got a compression tester you could use the hose to fill the combustion chamber with air pressure and the crank blocked from moving. You could then replace those springs without the valve falling in. I've never done it but know it has been done before.

I haven't seen a dyno sheet for a carbureted 5.7 but I know the factory rating for the stock fuel injected engine is 345 hp and 375 ft-lbs. Throw a set of headers on it and a cam I don't think 360-380 hp is an unrealistic figure.

Anybody got any data from a carbureted version?

Also the fan in the background against the garage....you going to be using that and is it from a Ram?
 
just a note also that I also purchased the hemi6 msd and pro data software that ran this motor....
already has the dual pattern flex plate on it, and new plug wires, water pump, housing, thermostat, all sensors are new...etc.

another question is torque converter/flywheel... any specifics for my 904 trans?

I would contact a vendor, like Modern Muscle(a FBBO site sponsor), Inertia, Arrington etc. for a good cam for your combo. You will however have to replace your valve springs. Which can be changed out without removing the heads with the right tool and some compressed air. You'll also need a good timing set. Lots of folks use the stock 6.1 set. There are aftermarket adjustable set out there. The down side is that they may require milling on the timing cover for clearance. Plus they are more expensive than the 6.1 set.

flex plate I have...SFI approved for 904/727 trans so im good there.

I read that article... kinda have mixed feelings on it.
for one I never take one persons word(or internet article) on what I personally do or use...always do my research then make my own mind up, if it makes me happy! that guy seems a little OCD on that intake and carb...I have read a few articles. where there using that same intake, and try different carbs and the smaller ones like a 600, or 650 make the most HP and torque... so that is totally opposite from that article. mine is not going to be a race car, It will be a cruiser, I might take it a time or two just to play and see what it does but that's it. so the intake I have is just fine for now unless I turn my car into a drag car/class car etc...
very interesting article though.
majority of post and adds and articles I have read love the intake....its on my motor and I have no plans to change it as im on a budget.

Thanks Don. I'll have to pick up one of those belts. I asked about the fan because I currently have one from a Dakota on my Coronet. I need to upgrade to a Ram fan because it would push the fan closer to the radiator core. So I have been keeping my eyes open for somebody doing a swap who plans to ditch the mechanical. So far with the fan about 4-5" from the core and no shroud it still doesn't over heat. But i want to remedy both of those scenario's. Also running a 190 thermostat (stock is 203) and an aluminum radiator from Northern.
 
finally got hemi home in its resting spot for a couple of months while I gather parts.....
cam, springs, oil pan, carb, trans, etc.... :)

question on trans.... im using my 904. my trans guy said the kickdown cable sorta runs how the trans shifts, performs, etc... kinda like a 200r or 700r orverdrive detent cable does.
is this the same as 727/904? do they act the same far as the kickdown linkages? will I need a special linkage or cable to run on this motor with a carb? brackets? just curious on what you other guys have done on using the old auto's behind the new motor.....

you can use a cable off any early 90's to early 2000's truck, van , jeep with a 5.2/.5.9. I spent 11 dollars at the you pull it junk yard for cable and brackets to hook it up.
 
what gm pump or part number or what vehicle is it off of do you use on these 5.7 hemis?
then you have to change pulleys? is there anywhere that you can just buy a pump with pulley ready to go for this conversion?

small update...finally started the project this past weekend. its not much but its the initial hurdle....

question of the day is: do I really need to keep all this original 273 and parts and stuff??? for the car....
 
i have the same car, same color, but with a 318. Not in as good shape as yours though. Nice.
